Saul kept his perfect record intact with a 1 1/4-length victory in the May 13, 350-yard New Mexico Breeders’ Futurity (RG3) for state-bred 2-year-olds at SunRay Park.
Racing for Jill B. Giles, Megan Hourigan, and Cory Taylor, Saul covered |his 350-yard trip in :17.330 while earning a 96 speed index and second win in as many starts. Adrian Ramos rode the gray son of Sign To Be A Runaway for trainer Wes Giles.
Saul was bred by Jill Giles of Vado, New Mexico. His sire, Sign To Be A Runaway, is
a winning 15-year-old son of the Runaway Winner stallion Real Runaway. Sign To Be A Runaway has bred the earners of more than $189,000 from two crops. The stallion is owned by Jose R. Riojas and stands at The Quarter Company at Chamberino, New Mexico.
Saul’s dam, the winning Dash Ta Fame mare The Rainbow Rea, ran second in two futurities
in 1998, including the 350-yard, $152,889 Utah Classic Futurity (RG3) at Laurel Brown Racetrack
near Salt Lake City. His second dam, the Zevi (TB) mare The Rainbow Riva, won the ’93 Cowboy Classic Futurity (G3) at Wyoming Downs.
Saul made his debut with a wire-to-wire, 1 1/4-length win in one of four Breeders’ Futurity tri- als on April 27, posting the second-fastest qualifying time. The $56,706 winner’s share of the $120,652 Breeders’ Futurity purse pushed the gray son of Sign To Be A Runaway’s bankroll to $58,506.
Saul was sent to post as the 5-2 favorite
in the full field of 10 and returned a $7.40 win mutuel. Jess Versiontino, the third-fastest qualifier and 3-1 third choice, finished second to complete a $26.40 ($2) exacta.
Fastest qualifier RF Big Daddys Girl ran third, 1 3/4 lengths behind Saul, and was fol- lowed by JC Stolywood, EB Rapidito, Eyesa Flashy Jess, Meleros Big 440, Jess Diggin, Queenofsaturdaynite, and Jade.
Jess Versiontino is a sorrel son of the Holland Ease stallion Winners Version owned by Victor M. Orona. A $4,000 yearling buy at
last year’s New Mexico-Bred Sale at Ruidoso Downs, Jess Versiontino has won one of two starts, and the $21,717 runner-up share of the New Mexico Breeders’ Futurity purse pushed the colt’s bankroll to $23,517.
RF Big Daddys Girl races for Frank Lujan. A homebred daughter of the Corona Cartel stallion Big Daddy Cartel, the gray filly has banked $15,972 from three outs.
