Spy, a homebred daughter of Your Eminence, rallied to win the April 23, $39,600 Russell & Helen Foutz Distaff Stakes (R) for New Mexico-bred fillies and mares at SunRay Park.
Trained by Dan Dennison, Explosive Spy covered 6 1/2 furlongs in 1:18.60 after closing on the early fractions of :23.06 and :46.56 set by Sunday Rose. The 5-year-old chestnut mare was sent to post as the 3-1 third choice in the field of nine, and her margin of victory was 1 3/4 lengths from 36-1 longshot One Foxy Babe.
Explosive Spy was stretching out in distance off of her third-place finish, 1 1/2 lengths behind winner Tilla Cat, in the 5 1/2-furlong, $85,000 La Coneja Stakes (R) at Sunland Park on March 17. She is one of 72 winners from eight crops sired by Your Eminence, an unraced Kentucky-bred son of the Halo stallion Saint Ballado.
A half brother to Grade 1 winners Unbridled Elaine and Glitter Woman, Your
Eminence has sired the earners of more than $3.5 million from 113 starters. Explosive Spy is also one of two winners from five starters foaled by Explosive Dancing, a winning New Mexico-bred daughter of the Northern Dancer stallion Danzatore.
Campaigned exclusively in New Mexico, Explosive Spy has won four of 16 starts,
and the $24,000 winner’s share of the Foutz Distaff purse increased the mare’s bankroll to $116,900.
A Kiss For Mom, a 31-1 longshot, fin- ished third, 3 3/4 lengths behind runner-up One Foxy Babe. McGoldie, 11-10 favor-
ite Sippin, Contradiction, Sunday Rose, Woodacouldadid, and Blackjack Sue com- pleted the order of finish.
One Foxy Babe is a 5-year-old daugh- ter of the Pulpit stallion Vulcan’s Pulpit campaigned by Jack and Joyce Harris. The homebred mare has won three of her 20 races and has earned $75,559, and her resume includes a sixth-place finish in last year’s Foutz Distaff.

Roll Hennessy Roll, A Kiss For Mom

New Mexico-bred 2-year-old fillies at SunRay Park.
A 5-year-old son of Quinton’s Gold, Mr. Digger races for Robert Gherardi and Kenneth Eklund. The bay gelding has won five of 29 outs, including the 2015 Totah Stakes (R) at SunRay Park, and the $8,000 runner-up share of the Jack Cole purse pushed his earnings to $103,005.

Shining Source, a 7-year-old son of Source racing for Barton Ranch Stables LLC and trainer Blake Rust, rallied down the stretch to win the May 7, $38,800 Jack Cole Stakes (R) for New Mexico-breds at SunRay Park.
Ridden by Elvin Gonzalez, Shining Source covered his 1-mile trip in 1:36.56, missing by less than one second the track record of 1:35.60 set by Mucho Daniero in the 1999 McGee Park Derby. The $24,000 winner’s share of the purse pushed the dark bay or brown gelding’s bankroll to $447,458.
Shining Source was bred by Susan Vescovo, and he is one of 17 winners from 34 start-
ers sired by Source, a Florida-bred son of the Buckaroo stallion Montbrook. Racing in six states, including New Mexico, from 2001-06, Source earned $368,125 from 51 outs, and his race record included a third-place finish in the 5 1/2-furlong, $54,150 KLAQ Handicap at Sunland Park in 2003.
Source has sired the earners of more than $1.2 million from six crops. A half brother to stakes winners Reporter and Dinner Affair, the
stallion is owned by Chris P. Hourigan, and he stands for a $1,000 fee at Hourigan Horse Farm at Anthony, New Mexico.
Shining Source’s dam, Shine Miss Comet, is a winning New Mexico-bred daughter of the Fappiano stallion Comet Shine. A 2002 foal, Shine Miss Comet has produced two winners from as many starters, including Kimbell, a half sister to Shining Source who won last year’s 1-mile, $170,000 Peppers Pride New Mexico Cup Distaff Championship (R) at Zia Park.
Shining Source was coming off of a Sunland Park meet during which he won
two of his three starts, the 6 1/2-furlong, $85,000 Johnie L. Jamison Handicap (R) on December 17, and the 1 1/16-mile, $85,000 Albert Dominguez Memorial Handicap (R) on January 17. All told, the gelding has won 11 of 39 starts, all in New Mexico.
