Ranchers Challenge
CORONA TOAST
by Danny Camp
A123 speed index is impressive any way you look at it. Even more impressive, Corona Toast accomplished that feat while scoring his first stakes victory. He also set a New Track Record for 350 yards while winning the Ranchers Challenge at the Santa Cruz County Fair on May 8.
With a total purse worth $16,950, it was Corona Toast who banked the first place check of $8,475.
The eight-year-old gelding was in control from the start. He was on the outside of the field in the 6-post when he broke on top with Jesus Osuna in the irons. The jockey was aboard the gelding for the first time.
Osuna rode him well. The pair immediately took the lead and were never headed, stopping the clock at :16.940 to earn the 123 speed index. The clock- ing smashed the previous record of :17.010 set by Withers in May of 2010.
Corona Toast now has a race record of five wins from 19 starts with a total bankroll of $254,181.
The bay gelding also placed second in the Louisiana QHBA Futurity-RG1, Louisiana QHBA Sale Futurity-RG1 and in the El Moro De Cumpas Stakes. He is also a graded stakes finalist in several other events - fourth in the Lee Berwick Futurity-G1 and a finalist in the Louisiana Champions Day Derby-RG2.

Beehive Futurity
BANNISTER
by John Moorehouse
The Beehive Futurity was delayed by two weeks when inclement weather disrupted the originally scheduled event, but on the make-up date, Bannister reigned supreme. The two-year-old gelding set the 300-yard track record at Weber Downs on May 20 in a dominant performance in the $69,175 event.
Bannister smashed a track record that stood for almost a quarter century. He finished the stakes in :15.372, surpassing the standing mark of :15.620, set on by Bradys Noble Pride on Aug. 21, 1992.
Owned by Denny and Sandy Weigt, Bannister is undefeated in two career starts and produced a $24,211 payday for his connections, putting his lifetime bankroll at $24,611.
He broke on top from the 5-post, led by 3/4-length entering the stretch and continued to pull away, enjoying a 1 1/4-length separation as he hit
the finish line. Monty Arrossa trains Bannister, and Tony Guymon was aboard for the record setting run.
J. Garvin Kelly and Nancy Yearsley bred Bannister and home-bred his dam, Goddess Artemis, a lightly-raced 2009 mare. Bannister is one of five starters and first stakes winner produced by Goddess Artemis. She has foaled nine total offspring.
Making Hot Wheels (Maknmoves-Suni Rae) beat top qualifier BK Katmandu (First Prize Stone-Lotta Kat Moves) by a nose to finish second.
