MAGNIFICENT JESS
by Danny Camp
Tthe finals for the 300-yard Desert Classic Futurity were held at Turf Paradise on May 1. Qualifying fastest qualifier Magical Jess and trial winner/third fastest qualifier Magnificent Jess - both making
their first official starts for owner Ugo De La Torre and trainer Mario Loza - jockey Rodolfo Arvizu
had a hard choice to make but ultimately opted for the fastest from the April 10 trials. Rider Martin Osuna picked up the mount on the sorrel filly Magnificent Jess. In a hard-fought contest, the stable mates finished one-two in the $71,013 finals, with Magnificent Jess taking the win by a neck.
Magnificent Jess broke from the 5-post and quickly took the lead. The filly drifted in a bit, but Osuna steadied his mount and held off a strong charge from the gelding Magical Jess to cross the wire in :15.513 for a 97 speed index.
The $35,506 winner’s share takes the total earn- ings of Magnificent Jess to $37,273.
Bred by Jose and Gustavo De La Torre in California, Magnificent Jess is out of 2-time stakes win- ner Last To Check Him, who earned nearly $320,000 in her racing career, including wins in the California Breeders’ Freshman Futurity and Farnam Stakes at Los Alamitos. EYESA FAMOUS EAGLE
by Danny Camp
The announcer called it a beautiful break, and it was. Each horse had a place to run, there was no misbehavior in the gates, and the riders made sure their mounts ran in a straight line. It was Quarter Horse racing at its finest in the 440-yard Bank of America Turf Paradise Championship Challenge on May 1. The contest offered a pot of gold worth $56,340 at the finish.
Eyesa Famous Eagle had not had his picture taken in over a year, and he was hungry when he stepped away from the 2-post, breaking on top and receiving every call en route to a length victory.
Emilio Tapia was aboard for the first time as
the duo stopped the clock in :21.087 for a 113 speed index. With the $27,043 first place check, the sorrel gelding now has a bankroll totaling $213,022 and a race record of 25-5(3)-8(3)-6(2).
