Zoetis TUP Distance Chal.
MICKEY WARD
by Danny Camp
It may have been over a year since his last out,
but it was all about Mickey Ward in the $19,710 Zoetis Turf Paradise Distance Challenge on May 1.
The time off certainly did the five-year-old sorrel gelding some good as he took this one in wire-to- wire fashion.
Mickey Ward broke from inside post in the 870- yard contest and sprinted clear to the front. He never gave up that position, widening his lead with each stride and finishing an impressive 3 1/2-lengths in front. Jorge Bourdieu, who rode the gelding in most of his previous outs, knew his mount well and sat chilly for the race for trainer Matthew Fales.
With the $9,855 first place check, Mickey Ward now has total lifetime earnings of $28,725. This is the second consecutive year that Mickey Ward has won the Zoetis Turf Paradise Distance Challenge, and he now has a race record of three wins from 11 outs.
Owned and bred in Arizona by Ralph and Carolyn Fales, Mickey Ward is out two-time winner A Mere Formality. The mare, who owns a 104 speed index herself, has produced 100% winers/ROM from seven starters with four of them being stakes horses. Canada Hi-Pt Aged Gelding, two-time stakes win- ner and 2-time New Track Record Setter Rockish is her top earner with over $300,000 banked.
Old Troubadour (Snowbound TB-Sum Chicks Fly) finished second under Jose Rivera, Jr. after a crowded start. The gelding is owned by Jesus M. Olivas and trained Brad Trego. Rare Ed (Dean Miracle-Ms Corona Jet) held on with a steady effort for third place. His connections include owner Martin Marin and trainer Jim Crotts. Fernando Gamez was handling the reins. Completing the order of finish were Mr Fun On The Run (Chicks A Blazin-Miss Fun On The Run), CNC Dream On (Mr Corona Cash-Ra Dream Catcher) and Cruisen (Heza Motor Scooter-Girls Rock).
