The pedigree story of Dasha Freda has a deep and rich history that will take us back to the town of Safford, Arizona. Safford
was the home of Rex Ellsworth, a rancher and farmer who wanted to diversify his livestock enterprises. So, he started breeding racehorses. His racing experience at that time was with bush tracks and quarter racing. Ellsworth would go on to be associated with such prominent Thoroughbreds as Swaps, Olden Times, Candy Spots, and Khaled. The success of Rex Ellsworth would make him a well-known figure in Thoroughbred racing. He was the leading breeder and owner in 1962 and 1963.
Ellsworth started his contribution to racing by going to Kentucky in 1933 to buy his first Thoroughbred breeding stock. He went back in 1934 to buy Silver Cord, reportedly paying $1,250 for the 1927 stallion. Silver Cord was a stakes placed runner with a second in the Christmas Handicap, a third in the Fleetwing Handicap, and a third in the Arrow Claiming Stakes. He showed his speed when he set a track record going 5 furlongs in 58 4/5 at Rockingham Park in August 1933. He raced 52 times with 8 wins, 6 seconds and 9 thirds, earning $7,962.
Silver Cord has a pedigree that carries some interesting ties to horses like Three Bars and Depth Charge. The sire of Silver Cord was Stefan The Great, who was the sire of Stephanie, the dam of Quickly. Quickly was the dam of AQHA Hall of Fame member Depth Charge and Triple Crown winner Count Fleet.
Stefan The Great was sired by The Tetrarch, a famous source of speed in
the modern racehorse. The Tetrarch was
an undefeated two-year-old Champion
in England, winning such races as the Champagne Stakes, Woodcote Stakes, and the Coventry Stakes. He only raced at two and won all seven of his starts. He became a leading sire in England.
The Tetrarch is best known as the sire
of Mumtaz Mahal, a racing Champion that was known for her speed as she was named a Champion Sprinter in England. She was also a Champion Two-Year-Old Filly. Mumtaz Mahal was the second dam of Nasrullah,
the sire of Bold Ruler who is the sire of such Quarter Horse sires as Master Hand.
The blood of The Tetrarch holds an interesting place in the information about Rex Ellsworth. The website http://www. bio.miami.edu/pze/family%20horses2.html shows a number of pictures and written histories about Rex Ellsworth and many of the horses he was associated with, including Swaps, Khaled, Olden Times, and Candy Spots.
