OSBALDO
by Danny Camp
There are many riders who make a difference, and Ivan Carnero is one of them. The jockey shined brightly when he took over the riding assignment on a six-year-old stud, garnering two wins in two weeks.
Under a ride that seemed effortless, Ivan rode Osbaldo to victory in the 400-yard $85,000 Jess Burner Memorial Handicap at Sunland Park on Dec.19. Breaking well in third position from the 5-hole, Osbaldo hit another gear halfway down the track and demolished the star studded field, finishing 1/2-length in front.
They stopped the clock at :19.772 and deposited the $51,000 winner’s share, which bumped Osbaldo’s earnings to $408,989. He now has a record of 11 wins and 4 stakes victories from 34 races.
Osbaldo’s connections include owner Hubaldo Solis and trainer Ken Grisham. The horse was bred in New Mexico by owner Hubaldo Solis out of unraced Shes
So Blazin. The mare has produced 4 winners and 5 ROM from as many starters, including additonal stakes winner Blazin Version. Osbaldo, however, is her highest money earner with three stakes wins.
Major Moonflash (First Moonflash-Prima LD) unseated his rider in the gate, but jockey Adrian Ramos was unfazed and they finished 2nd for owners Pierre & Leslie Amestoy and trainer Jason Giles. Jess Got Issues (Jesse James Jr-Yo Mamma Got Issues) was 3rd under Ricky Ramirez. His team includes owner Debra and Joseph Meridyth Jr and trainer Guadalupe Munoz Jr. Followed
by Dungarees Version (Winners Version-Forty
One Special), Whatever Bill (Southern Corona- Edge Of Elegance), Justified By Chicks (Chicks
A Blazin-Jesstifiable), Booyah Bay (Brookstone Bay-Jess Brenda), Seeyalateralligator (Winners Version-Stars In My Eye), Gonna Make You Royal (Gonamakeyoureyesblue-Sweetly Royal), & Reckless Wind (Furyofthewind-Reckless Coin).

clear in the lane and hit the finish 1 1/2-lengths over runner-up Get Down Bambi, stopping the timer in :19.428 for a speed index of 89. The $51,000 first place check boosted Asticas earnings to $308,923.
It was the eighth win and fourth stakes victory from 12 lifetime starts for odds-on favorite Astica. Numbered among her other added-money scores are wins in last year’s Zia Derby, Pelican Stakes, and the First Moonflash Stakes.
The M J Farms homebred is produced from the Grade 1-winning mare Alice K White, winner of the 2009 Grade 1 Golden State Derby and that year’s Grade 2 La Primera Del Ano Derby, both ran at Los Alamitos.
