EC CARTEL
by John Moorehouse
EC Cartel closed out his 2015 campaign on a three-race win streak. The latest victory came at Evangeline Downs, going wire-to-wire in the
$30,000 IP 870 Stakes on Dec. 19.
A six-year-old gelding owned by Alejandra
Carrion, EC Cartel collected his seventh win in 19 career starts. This marked his second stakes victory, joining the Q Racing 870 Distance Stakes held in November at Lone Star. That race was his most recent prior out, continuing a win streak that began Oct. 4 in a 550-yard allowance also at Lone Star.
EC Cartel has been tough at 870 yards, previ- ously logging six wins at that distance, and that trend continued in this race. The gelding broke on top from the inside starting gate, promptly building a 1-length lead by the first call. EC Cartel led by 2-lengths going into the stretch, coasting to the wire sporting a 1 1/2-length margin.
Trey Ellis trains EC Cartel, who finished in :46.265 and registered a 90 speed index. Francisco Calderon was aboard as EC Cartel produced a $15,000 payday that boosted his total earnings to $79,570.
Enrique Carrion bred EC Cartel and owns his dam, Twayna Too, a lightly-raced 1994 mare who has seven foals, six of whom have made starts. EC Cartel is one of two stakes winners in the brood. The other is It Makes Too, who logged a stakes victory in Mexico.
Jessa Little Rusty (Mr Jess Perry-Rustys Quickid) secured runner-up honors for owner Louis Howard and trainer John Stinebaugh. Gilbert Ortiz was
in the irons. KR Jess Hopeful (Jess Louisiana Blue-Blankie) hit the board in third place. R and R Racing, Inc., owns the gelding, who is trained by Ray Robbins and had Donell Blake aboard.
Keepn It Kool (First To Shine-Kool K.J. TB), Sheza Gamer (Game Patriot-Dealafly) and The Game Lover (Game Patriot-La Lover) completed the field. Austins Deal and MCM Zuper Man scratched.
Sam’s Town Stakes
SCOOPIES LEAVING YOU
by John Moorehouse
Scoopies Leaving You finished strong for 2015, winning the $25,850 Sam’s Town Stakes on Dec. 19 at Evangeline Downs. For the four-year-old colt, it marked the third victory in a span of four outs— with all the wins coming in stakes company.
At 350 yards, the Sam’s Town was longer than either of those other races, run at 250 and 220 yards, respectively. The Kevin Broussard trainee stumbled breaking from the 4-post but led at every call, open- ing a 1/2-length lead by the first call that held up at each remaining juncture.
Donald Watson did the riding as Scoopies Leaving You finished the race in :17.593, posting a 95 speed index and bringing home a $15,000 payday that improved the colt’s total earnings to $195,780. Owned by Joel Galindo, Scoopies Leaving You now holds 11 wins in 22 total starts. Four of those victories are in stakes events, with the recent run of success including this year’s Gentilly Dash and Evangeline Downs Dash. Scoopies Leaving You is the only stakes winner out of his dam, Ms Scoopies Toast. Home-bred by Gerald Libersat, Ms Scoopies Toast is stakes-placed and has four foals, all starters.
Cartels Fortune (Carters Cartel-Jewels Fortune) finished second by a head for owner Rodney Verret and trainer Kenneth Roberts, Sr. Lucas Constantin was aboard. TF Eyes R Struttin (Struttin To Beduino-Eyes R Special) placed third. Owned by Louis Johnson Jr., the filly was saddled by Lanny Keith and ridden by Raul Ramirez, Jr.
Completing the field were JW Divino Comento (First Comment-By Divine Right), Sleepers Best Corona (Coronas Prospect-Call Me The Sleeper), The Eagle Express (One Famous Eagle-Rustys Quickid), Quic Carter (Carters Cartel-Quic Jess), Allizoom (First Prize Perry-Lett Her Zoom), T Boy G (Sir Runaway Dash-Got A Project) & Chale Viejo (Mr Queens Mystery-My Mamas Miracle).
Bienvenido De Nuevo Stakes
DAYTONA B
by Michael Compton
Fresh off a dominating win in the Bank of America Challenge Championship at Lone Star Park in
his previous start, Daytona B capped a sensational
season for owner Gregorio Garcia Garza on Dec. 26, streaking to a facile score in the $25,000 Bienvenido De Nuevo at Hialeah Park.
In capturing his fourth stakes event of the year, Daytona B won the Bienvenido De Nuevo Stakes in hand. With Ricky Ramirez riding for trainer Rolando Almanza, Daytona B grabbed the lead at the start and ran away from six rivals, crossing the wire a measured 1 1/4-lengths in front.
Sent off as the odds-on choice, Daytona B sped 330 yards in the lively time of :16.680, earning a lofty 102 speed index. The final clocking came in just ticks off of Royal Snow Problem’s 2011 track record of :16.481.
The $15,000 winner’s share of the purse increased his lifetime bankroll to $487,353 and improved his record to 18-9-3-2. In addition to the AQHA Challenge Championship, Daytona B also captured the graded Sam Houston Championship Challenge and the non-graded Sam Abbey Memorial Invitational.
Bred in Texas by Bielau Oaks, Daytona B comes by his talent naturally. His dam, Dashing Pana, won 4 stakes events and was graded stakes-placed during her racing career, banking $277,139.
Jockey Cesar Esqueda piloted second place fin- isher Talktomeson (Streak And Dash-Not My Choice) for owner Daisy Martinez and trainer Manuel Mata.
Mesa Marval (Foose-Straw Flying Lady) and Osdany Leal finished third for owner Alayn Acosta and trainer Eduardo Morales.
Mo Zoomo (Shazoom-Stylish Form), A Priceless Gal (Feature Mr Jess-A Southern Gal), Oldsmobile Hill (Separatist-Tahma Hawk) and Da Licious (Feature Mr Jess-Da Edge) completed the order of finish. Novas Gold and Runaway Canyon were scratched.
