ILL STOP THE WORLD
by Michael Compton
Astumble at the start of the $26,750 Signature Stakes at Hialeah Park failed to halt Ill Stop The World who rolled to victory in the 350-yard contest on Jan. 10
With Omar Reyes in the saddle, Ill Stop The World quickly recovered from his misstep after leaving the gate and dueled for the early lead with Mesa Marvel.
After putting that rival away, Ill Stop The World battled with Paint Your Zoe to the wire, bravely fighting that one off to win by a neck. The 6-year-old gelding stopped the timer in :17.584, earning a speed index of 97 for trainer Carolina Gaytan.
It was the second stakes score for Ill Stop The World, who also annexed last year’s Grade 3 La Plata Stakes at SunRay Park. In 2013 he finished second in the Grade 1 Ruidoso Derby.
The $16,050 winner’s share of the Signature Stakes purse increased his earnings to $243,222 for owner Alfredo Sanchez.
Bred in New Mexico by Ron and Kati Hanna, Ill Stop The World is the initial stakes winner produced from two-time winner You Light Up My Life, the dam of five winners from as many starters.
Nobie Hudson’s Paint Your Zoe (PYC Paint Your Wagon-Zoe Alexis) broke in after the start and just missed under Edwuin Lujan. The 4-year-old gelding was saddled by Raul Zavala.
Talktomeson (Streak And Dash-Not My Choice) finished third under Agustin Silva. The 5-year-old gelding is owned by Daisy Martinez and trained by Manuel Mata.
Followed by Mesa Marvel (Foose-Straw
Flying Lady), Cash Happens (Chick Happens- Dashin Pie) & A Priceless Gal (Feature Mr Jess-A Southern Gal). El Macho Prieto Boy and Fly Thru The Fire scratched.
