JESS GOOD REASON
by Tracy Gantz
It hasn’t taken long for Jess Good Reason to establish her credentials as a talented racehorse. Though she didn’t debut until Nov. 1, she finished
up 2015 with three wins in as many starts, all at Los Alamitos, including a victory in the Dec. 27 Holiday Handicap.
Jess Good Reason didn’t have the best of starts in the 350-yard Holiday. Drawn on the outside, she broke inwardly, brushing slightly with Timely Delivery. Then Jess Good Reason lugged out.
“She lost her hind legs at the start,” explained Paul Jones, who trains Jess Good Reason for owners Cina and John Sperry.
Jockey Roberto Hernandez straightened out Jess Good Reason, and the filly quickly began passing horses. She grabbed the win in the final strides by a nose in :17.946.
Preston and Karen Cloud bred Jess Good Reason in Oklahoma from the winning mare Jess Call Me Tieing. The mare has produced three starters, all winners, including stakes-placed Make It Jess.
Ivys Storm (Red Storm Cat-Whats Jody) finished second with Santiago Mendez aboard. She has also placed in her two other stakes attempts. Jose Flores trains her for owner Jorge Moya.
Jose Nicasio piloted Luv On The Run (Favorite Cartel-Luv In The Wind) to third for trainer Sergio Fiscal and owner Jesus Nava. The colt dead-heated for first in the John Deere Los Alamitos Juvenile Championship Challenge and ran third in the California Breeders Freshman Stakes.
Completing the field were Tim Streakin Joy (Tac It Like A Man-Streakin For Joy), Timely Delivery (Volcom-One Prompt Chick), High Class Cartel (TR Dasher-Haute Cartel), & Trixsey Sue (FDD Dynasty-Gotta Corona Habit).
Barbra B Handicap
HE IS THE RISINGSTAR
by Tracy Gantz
Jose Amador Alvarez isn’t only He Is The Risingstar’s regular rider, the jockey helped break the gelding at the Fulton Quien Sabe Stonewall Ranch in Stonewall, Texas. He flies in to Los Alamitos to ride He Is The Risingstar, most recently winning the Jan. 10 Barbra B Handicap.
Last fall, Paul Jones took over training He Is The Risingstar for the Fulton Quien Sabe Ranches. The now 4-year-old gelding won the 550-yard Paul B. Ford Memorial Handicap before adding the Barbra B at the same distance.
When the gate opened, He Is The Risingstar
got away quickly and had the lead immediately. He battled the entire stretch with Well And Good to his outside. Well And Good never gave up, but He Is The Risingstar received every call and won by a neck in :27.105.
Mercy Hinklins Horse Farm LLC bred He Is The Risingstar in Texas from stakes-placed Meddlin Mischief. The mare has produced 15 winners from 22 starters, including stakes winners Diamond Tres Seis and Chief Shazoom, plus stakes-placed Meddlin Special, Blistering Speed, JP In Hot Pursuit, and Strength N Honor.
Dr. Ed Allred’s homebred stakes winner Well And Good (Separatist-How Good), ridden by Gary Boag, defeated stakes winner The Midnite Caller
(A Regal Choice-Cee The Blurr), piloted by Juan Andrade, for second. Scott Willoughby trains Well And Good, who qualified for the 2015 Grade 1 Champion of Champions. Adriana Aceves owns
and trains third place The Midnite Caller, having claimed him for $8,000. Completing the field were Uncle Rudy TB (Freespool-Peaceable Mood), Front And Center (Walk Thru Fire-Katie Katella), Oh Daddy Oh TB (Scat Daddy-Impeachable), Follow The Dream (Tres Seis-In Between Dreams) & Blistering Speed (Tres Seis-Meddlin Mischief).
Harrah’s Dash Stakes
SCOOPIES LEAVING YOU
by John Moorehouse
Scoopies Leaving You rang in 2016 much the same way he spent the majority of the prior year, with a vic- tory. Joel Galindo’s five-year-old horse lugged in to win the $15,000 Harrah’s Dash Stakes on Jan. 9 at Louisiana Downs, setting a New Track Record in the process.
A Kevin Broussard trainee, Scoopies Leaving You finished the 250 yards in :12.977, surpassing the standing record of :13.048 set by This Cartel Is Cold in Feb. of 2013. Scoopies Leaving You has won four of his past five outs and made at least a top-three finish in nine straight starts. Scoopies Leaving You now holds 12 career wins in 23 starts, and his life- time earnings went over the $200,000 milestone to $204,780 with the $9,000 prize from this event.
In this race Jockey Donald Watson brought Scoopies Leaving You out of the 7-hole. Scoopies Leaving You broke well, led by a 1/2-length entering the stretch and beat Sleepers Best Corona to the fin- ish line by a nose.
Gerald D. Libersat bred both Scoopies Leaving You and his dam, Ms Scoopies Toast. Libersat also owns Ms Scoopies Toast, a stakes-placed 2002 mare. All four of her foals have made starts, but Scoopies Leaving You remains her highest money earner and only stakes winner.
Runner-up Sleepers Best Corona (Coronas Best Prospect-Call Me The Sleeper) is owned by Frank Benson, trained by Javier Contreras and had Alfonso Lujan aboard. Sydney Leigh (First Prize Perry-Include) placed third for Martin Trejo, who does double duty as owner and trainer. David Alvarez did the riding. The remaining order of finish was Heza Fast Afair (Hez Fast As Cash-Mariancurrentafair), JW Divino Comento (First Comment-By Divine Right), Julians Money Maker (Shazoom-Streakin O Toole), Swingin Princess (Swingin Jess-Thrillish), Sweet Okey Dokey (Okey Dokey Fantasy- Sweet Mama Gene), Cartel Arrangement (Carters Cartel- Hawks Dancing Straw) & PYC First Prize Mia (PYC Paint Your Wagon-First Prize Diamond).
