Marathon Stakes
FIRE ON THE FLY
by Danny Camp
Fire On The Fly scored a wire-to-wire victory in the $15,000 Marathon Stakes at Louisiana Downs on Jan. 9. Seven contenders endured the 870-yard
event for 4-year-old and older Quarter Horses. Fire On The Fly broke from the 6-post on
the lead and steadily put the field behind him. With a little encouragement from rider Donell Blake coming down the stretch, they crossed the wire 4-lengths in front and stopped the clock at :46.189 to earn a 93 speed index. This was the first time jockey Blake rode Fire On The Fly, and they seemed to compliment each other very well.
With this win, Fire On The Fly has a race record of nine wins from 26 starts. With the $9,000 winner’s share from this race, the six-year-old geld- ing now has a total bankroll of $155,956.
Fire On The Fly is trained by Amanda Buchanan-Hadley and bred/owned by Bullard Farms. Fire On the Fly was bred in Texas out of multiple winner Shades Of Pink TB. The mare has produced 11 winners & 3 stakes horses from 13 Thoroughbred & Quarter Horse starters. Fire On The Fly is her top money earner and is full-brother to stakes winner Pink Cartel. The mare is also the granddam of Central Hi-Point Distance Horse Call Her Hero.
Snowbound Cowboy (Snowbound TB-Strawberry Cartel) was 2nd under Luis Ruiz for owner Greta & Pete Guerra and trainer Manuel Vega Jr.
The photo showed Heza Fast Corridor (Heza Fast Dash-Classic Corridor TB) was up for third. His connections include owner Arkofa Farm and trainer Elroy Potts Sr.
Completing the field were Sheza Gamer (Game Patriot-Dealafly), Rakin In The Jax (Rakin In The Cash-Alcohol And Ambiance), Mista JB (Gros Oreille-Rose Of Etbauer TB) and Obadoe (Heza Fast Dash-Kay P TB).
