                                Mexican Bred Derby Challenge
SF SHAKE A MYSTERY
by Luis Prieto Zamudio, translation by Eduardo Silveyra
The third running of the Mexican Bred Derby Challenge was held March 12, with the trials held two weeks prior. From the 10 finalists, only nine saw action in the 350 yard finals after the filly Star Crown scratched.
There were two contenders who stood out with fastest qualifying times: Lady Proforma and SF Shake A Mystery. They were - in that order - preferred in the betting box to collect the winner’s share of the $622,830 pesos (approximately U.S. $31,460) purse assigned to the race.
The results of the race were decided from the start when La Escuincle (#7) literally “tack- led” Bugs 21 (#6), and Lady Proforma (#5) also received pressure from Espejo Scaramanga and was trapped. In the meantime, SF Shake
A Mystery (#3) took control of the race with jockey David Garcia. They drifted towards the center of the track and almost interfered with one of his rivals. He advanced decisively, how- ever, and crossed the goal 1/2-length in front of Sea Chico (#9), bringing to his record the second victory and first stakes win in six starts. His time was :17.73 for a speed index of 84.
At the end of the race, there were several protests that culminated only in the disquali- fication of Espejo Scaramanga from eighth to ninth place for the infraction described.
SF Shake A Mystery was bred by Héctor
Roldán Arreola, owner of Rancho Santa Fe, in whose facilities the 3-year-old grey colt receives his training. In the same location is SF Shake A Mystery’s sire Mr Queens Mystery and his dam SF Snow Shake. Although owned by Jorge
Jiménez, he runs in the name of Rancho Santa
Fe. The reward for his effort was $286,501 pesos (approximately $14,472 U.S.), which is the main contribution to his earnings figure.
In second place was Sea Chico (Sea Horse Corona
- Speednchico) ridden by Moisés González Garcia for San Antonio AJH Cuadra and trainer Jose Ravel Baltazar Aguilar.
Third place was occupied by One Rabbit (Rabbits Rainbow - Woodys Wild One) with Paul Osvaldo Rodríguez aboard. He is owned by Orozco Racing and was saddled by Pedro Ríos Torres.
The other participants, all of Mexican upbringing as well as those already mentioned, occupied the following positions when cross- ing the finish line: Lady Proforma (Sambaso
Dancer – Proforma), La Escuincle (Natovas Prince – Pascola), Pescado Jr (Separatist Jr
– Fishers Guitar), Long Two (Long Gone – Bellota Gone), Bugs 21 (Rabbits Rainbow – La Mona Liza) & Espejo Scaramanga (Fly Jess
Fly – Extraordinaress). Star Crown scratched.
