The photo on page 181 shows AQHA Hall of Fame horse Leo. The colt, who was born in 1940, was bred by John Wesley House near Cameron, Texas. Leo was sired by Joe Reed II, who was by Joe Reed. Leo was out of Little Fanny, also sired by Joe Reed.
John W. Tillman of Pawhuska, Oklahoma, bought Leo in 1942 for $750 and won quite a few races with him. At approximately 14.2 hands, Leo, who was trained in most of his outs by Bill Morgan, raced successfully on brush tracks for several years. His first race was at Eagle Pass, Texas, when at 18 months of age he finished second against excellent competition at one-eighth mile. Leo was practically unbeatable while racing in Pawhuska, winning 20 of 22 starts. Plagued with injuries, Leo was retired from racing, and even had to take a break from breeding at one point in order to recover from an injury.
Known for his good conformation and disposition, the sorrel stallion went through numerous owners before Bud Warren of Perry, Oklahoma, bought him in 1947 for $2,500, even though the stallion had a bad knee and stifle problems.
Although Leo first entered stud to a limited number of mares in 1943, he was an aged horse before he began to make his mark as a sire with owner Bud Warren. In all, Leo sired 554 registered foals, including 31 stakes winners and 211 ROM earners. Leo was the all- time leading sire of AA and AAA horses, with 24 of his starters winning 44 races, as well
as the #1 sire of two-year-old ROM earners in 1952. Some of Leo’s most famous offspring include Champions Miss Meyers, Mona Leta, Bobbie Leo and Palleo Pete, as well as his all-time leading money earner Miss Olene. Leo is the #2 all-time leading broodmare sire of AQHA Champions with 14, only behind Dash For Cash, including Ettago, Goetta, Little Blue Sheep and Vandy’s Flash. Leo also made an indelible mark in the barrel racing industry through his daughter Flit, and he is arguably one of the most predominant sires in the Quarter Horse industry.
Bud Warren laid Leo to rest in 1967 at the age of 27 and buried him on a hill across from his house when the stallion could no longer get up on his own due to the old knee injury. Leo was inducted into the American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame in 1989.
In 1997, Remington Park honored the stallion with the first running of the Leo Stakes. Two-time World Champion SLM Big Daddy won this first race, as well as the next year’s running in 1998. The Leo Stakes has since been won by numerous racing leaders, including World Champion Cold Cash 123 and Champions Country Chicks Man, Dashin Is Easy, Joanna Kate and Miss Kips Streakin. This year’s $101,800 Grade 1 Leo Stakes was contested on April 1 at Remington Park and was won by Bodacious Eagle.
