AQHA Mexico Derby Challenge
LONELY IN FRONT BR
by Luis Prieto Zamudio, translation by Eduardo Silveyra
Seven individuals of three years of age were enrolled in the June 26 AQHA Mexico Derby Challenge at 400 yards with a total prize pool of $428,183 pesos (approximately US $23,372). As is customary, all were bred in the United States.
It was the last race of the day, held over an unusually bad track that was hit by torrential rains the previous day on Saturday as well as on race day Sunday. On those days, 24 races were held to determine the qualifiers to the Garanones Futurity. Despite the track offi- cially considered “puddled,” horses and riders went out to do their best, but optimal perfor- mance was not expected in such conditions.
Bet preferences marked the colt BP Apollitical Policy (#6) as the favorite, having set and holding the 300-yard track record on May 24, 2015, when he won his maiden. Followed as second favorite in the odds was the filly Lonely In Front BR (#4), who in her three appearances earned a third and two second place finishes. Both of these participants had trouble at the start and blocked Fast Prize Robin (#5), winner of the AQHA Distaff Challenge this year.
Notwithstanding the foregoing, Lonely
In Front BR and BP Apollitical Policy put on
a show, as the first stayed in front of the field and the colt was just behind. At the finish, BP Apollitical Policy pressed his way menacingly, but the effort was insufficient to catch up, leav- ing a 1/2-length margin. The filly Lonely In Front BR was declared innocent of the original transgression and went into the winner’s circle with her rider Eddi Cuellar, where they were received by owner Ismael Garcia Hernandez
and Luis Aldo Flores, her trainer. The race time was :19.43 (speed index 98).
Thus, the daughter
of Favorite Cartel out of
Strength In Numbers (by
Strawfly Special) took her
first stakes victory and third
victory of her record from
four starts. The reward for
her effort was $209,809 pesos (approximately US $11,452).
She was bred by Benny Rosset (EU).
As already mentioned, BP Apollitical Policy (Apollitical Jess – CC Policy) finished second with the assistance of Moises González García for Haras Ixbiapan and trainer Juan Jose Razo. It is the first time the colt placed in a stakes race. His time was :19.49.
Third place went to Jess La Jolla Blue (Jess Louisiana Blue - Tobrendawithlove), owned by Cuadra Zamarrero, under the direction of Mario Alberto Lopez Marmolejo for trainer Erik Zenteno González .
The remaining four positions were occupied in the following order: Fast Prize Robyn (Carters Cartel – Fast Prize Doll), Chuck Barie (Good Reason SA – Scraw Barie Shake), Skye Fall (First Moonflash – Bac Up The Buss Sissy) and Hard Justice (One Sweet Jess – Blushing Lady Bug).
