Garanones Derby
EL JAPONES
by Luis Prieto Zamudio, translation by Eduardo Silveyra
34fillies and colts that were born in Mexico were registered for four qualify-
ing races to the Garanones Derby on June 5. Of these, the fastest 10 at 350 yards were cho- sen for the finals, including the black filly N Sure who marked :17.449 seconds and headed the list of candidates wanting to collect the main part of the total purse of $509,900 pesos (approximately US $26,841).
These individuals passed through the Selecta Auction of 2014 and ran in the respec- tive futurity in 2015. The Garanones Derby finals were held on June 19. MSR Royal Corona, belonging to Abelardo Gallegos Fernández, was scratched. A beautiful after- noon on the track hosted this select group
of three fillies and six males, wherein said N Sure, Game Sambaso, and Silver Perry, in that order, received public preference at the box office bets. The mood was on, as in the previ- ous race on the card and at the same distance Rosey Posey had been crowned the winner of the Revelacion Clasico.
The gates opened for the Garanones Derby and, in the first jump, El Jamaikino (#8)
tripped. When he started to recover, he was hit by Game Sambaso (#6) and First Prize Girl (#9). Before them went El Japones (#5) well lead by José Edgar Dominguez and using the center of the track.
The lead of his competi-
tors would be short because
the others, which moved
in the inner rail, were soon
overtaken by the devastating
gait of the sorrel El Japones,
who crossed the finish line in :17.36 (speed index 94), 1 1/4-length in front of Silver Perry.
El Japones (Danny Cartel - To Chickuma, Ought To Be First) won the Garanones Derby after winning his trial heat by the difference of a neck over the retired MSR Royal Corona, scoring in :17.679 for the third best qualifying time. Some reservations were given as to the colt’s performance in the trials, since he had knee surgery in 2015. After the trials, he had significant inflammation, and many expected him to be removed from the finals. However,
his team did a good job handling the situation and El Japones won the finals with a remarkable performance over his previous effort.
This is the first clasico win for the colt, who is owned by Cuadra El Bebo and who was saddled by Erik Zenteno González. The race also marks his fourth win in 11 performances, of which he has also obtained a second
and a third. For his effort in the Garanones Derby, he added to his account $214,158 pesos (approximately US $11,273). The colt was bred by Cuadra La Presita in Culiacan, Sinaloa.
Silver Perry (Jesstified - Ziplock Chic) ran out of steam in the final yards and gave up his position of leader, coming in second under the assistance of Lauro Vazquez. In 2015, he won the Selecta Auction Futurity Consolation, and in the current season arrived second in the Mexico Derby. He is owned by the Cuadra GOMAC and trained by Carlos Vazquez
