Lonely In Front BR wins the AQHA Mexico Derby Challenge
The Jodys Glory is (after the The Prize Clasico) the second of the classics for two year olds, which traditionally involves colts and fillies imported from the United States. This year with a roll call of 13 registered, it was necessary to do qualifying races to select the 10 fastest runners. The trials took place on June 12 at a distance of 350 yards.
The most notable absentee was the filly Enthusiastique, a representative of Cuadra Armadillo and winner of the The Prize Clasico, who was scratched last minute from the trials. As usual, at this age and level of competition, there are emerging new athletes as they mature in the course of the season. Such was the case for the filly Oak Tree Candy Wagon, who was positioned with the fastest qualifying time of :17.724, also topping the odds to win in the Jodys Glory Clasico finals on July 3.
In the race previous to this one, there came a torrential downpour that changed the fast track status to waterlogged, which increased the dif- ficulty of the challenge for these young runners.
Horses and riders were presented, moving to the preconditioning area, and prepared to perform. They took their starting positions over a crowded avenue covered in puddles and dirt picked up by their hooves. The race was dispatched and the journey towards the goal began, with the immediate highlighting
of the grey Oak Tree Candy
Wagon, who started and remained at the center of the track showing impressive speed. When
it seemed she would claim her second victory, a strong effort by the sorrel gelding One Shining Ocean moved him very close to the outer barrier, and he was paid in good dividends by crossing the finish by the difference of a nose, shining brightly under the guidance of Moisés González García.
The travel time was :17.87 over the waterlogged track. The winner, who is owned by Cuadra San Lazaro de Arara and was
purchased at TQHA Yearling Sale for $5,000, is a son of Shining First Dash out of the mare A Tempting Ocean (by Ocean Runaway).
With this victory, which
is credited to the record of trainer Rafael Alejandro Contreras, he earned $218,460 pesos (approximately US $11,831), the major part of a total purse of $364,100 pesos
(approximately US $19,718) for this race.
As already mentioned, the dapple grey Oak
Tree Candy Wagon (Oak Tree Special - La Candy Woman) collected the prize for second place, a product of her effort with rider Ismael Vallejo. She is owned by Cuadra Zamarrero and was saddled by Erik Zenteno González.
In third place was Special E Valiant (Valiant Hero - Special Debonair), a gelding owned by Cuadra Rhoanda. His trainer is José de Jesús Valdivia.
