Firecracker Futurity at GRP
HENRY CRAIG
by John Moorehouse
Henry Craig continues to run roughshod over the competition in the Pacific Northwest. The two-year-old gelding won the $31,500 Firecracker
Futurity at Grants Pass in Oregon, on July 4, notch- ing his fourth victory in as many career outs and his second in stakes company.
Cedar Creek Tree Farm Ranch and Racing owns and bred Henry Craig, who also won the Pot O’Gold Futurity at Sun Downs in Washington before mak- ing his way to Oregon to qualify for this futurity and tally the second-fastest time in the trials.
In his June 19 trial heat, Henry Craig broke on the lead under rider Eduardo Gutierrez-Sosa. The gelding briefly gave up the lead, but then drove to the wire to win by a neck.
In the Firecracker Futurity at Grants Pass finals, it took nearly every bit of the 350 yards for Henry Craig to win this second futurity.
The gelding broke well in second place under Gutierrez-Sosa. Henry Craig dueled throughout the contest with L Bar D Genuine Red. Henry Craig was just up at the finish line, out-nodding his competitor at the wire.
Trained by Hector Magallanes, Henry Craig fin- ished the race in :17.877 for a 94 speed index. That surpassed his :17.997 effort in qualifying.
Henry Craig reaped a $12,600 payday for his vic- tory, nearly doubling his career earnings to $25,879. His race record is a perfect four wins from four career starts.
Henry Craig is one of three stakes winners out of his dam, Copa Show Girl. The stakes placed mare is owned by the Hayden Brothers Ranch. Copa Show Girl finished second in the Retama Park Derby-G1 and was a finalist in two additional graded stakes races. She has produced 12 race age foals, 10 of which have made starts. All of her starters are money earners.
L Bar D Genuine Red (Genuine Strawfly-Be First Rose) finished second by daylight for Hillary Durham. The Robert Beckner trainee had Kassie Guglielmino aboard. Magallanes also trains Gabbanelli (Ivory James-Eye Love It), the pre-race betting favorite and top qualifier, who finished in third place. Jorge Hernandez owns the filly, who was ridden by Jake Samuels.
Win Surfer (Big Daddy Cartel-She Surfs), Jesses Claim Ta Fame (Jesse James Jr-One Fast Trick), Mariota Man (Azoom-Quatorze TB), Heres Tinas Boy (No Secrets Here-Tombstone Tina) and EZ Frosty Morn (Heza Fast Dash-Easy Verna) com- pleted the field.
Independence Day H.-G3
LOTTA DYNASTY
by Tracy Gantz
Surprises abounded in the Independence Day Handicap, which was run at Los Alamitos on July 3. Multiple stakes winner Far Niente went off as the second choice to Sugardaddy B, but at the wire it was 15-1 longshot Lotta Dynasty that laid his head on the line first.
The break told the story, as Lotta Dynasty came away quickest under jockey Cruz Mendez. The gelding lugged out a little, and Far Niente closed ground to make it close. Nevertheless, Lotta Dynasty received every call and held on to his advantage to win by a head in :15.349 for the 300 yards.
Owners George and Judy Weldon bred Lotta Dynasty in Utah. The gelding was making his first start at Los Alamitos and his first in trainer Jose Flores’ barn.
Previously, Lotta Dynasty won the 2014 Mile High Futurity and finished second in the 2015 Arapahoe Derby Challenge.
The Weldons also bred Lotta Dynasty’s dam, winner Gotta Lotta Fame. The mare has produced two winners in five starters, including stakes winner/ New Track Record setter JW A Royal Trip.
Far Niente (FDD Dynasty-Shahayla) had a 1/2-length on Sugardaddy B (Bigtime Favorite-LS Honey Brown) for second. Ramon Sanchez piloted Far Niente for trainer Jose Hernandez Jr. and owners Tom Atwood and John Wells. Far Niente’s most recent stakes victory came in last year’s Vessels Maturity-G1. Samuel Mendez rode Sugardaddy B for trainer Guillermo Morales. Conception Gutierrez, Erasmo Hernandez, and Manuel Torrez own the gelding, who had won his last two starts.
Rounding out the field were Jake Gold Br
(Gold Medal Jess-Charlotte Bryan), Viento Negro (First Moonflash-Coup Of Corona), BF Farm Boss (Hawkinson-Shirleys Strawfly), and Foosilame (Foose-Golden Butterfly Rd).
Ed Burke Juvenile
JANES CARTEL
by John Moorehouse
For Janes Cartel’s connections, the Ed Burke Juvenile proved to be a fine prize. The two-year- old black filly made an erratic, but victorious, run
in the $30,000 stakes at Los Alamitos on June 19. The race was held for competitors that did not qual- ify successfully for the Ed Burke Million Futurity.
The Juvenile was not a smooth trip for Janes Cartel. She broke well from the 7-post and was all over the track, but remained near the front the entire time. Down the stretch, she surpassed School Prez
to secure the win by a neck as well as the $16,500 payday, more than tripling Janes Cartel’s prior
career bankroll to a new total of $23,725. Guillermo Morales trains Janes Cartel, who had Rodolfo Arvizu in the irons for a 350-yard trip that took :17.592 and produced a 92 speed index. That’s almost a half-second faster than the time Janes Cartel registered in her trial for the Burke Million.
Balgo Racing Team, Inc., home-bred Janes Cartel, who reached the winner’s circle for the third time in four career starts. Janes Cartel is the first starter out of multiple winner Unusual Jane TB, who earned $144,056 in her career.
School Prez (Kiddy Up-Madam Prez) out- nodded Apollitical Seven to place second. Jesus Avila and Jesus Cuevas own School Prez, who is trained by Valentin Zamudio and had Ramon Sanchez aboard. Jaime Gomez trains Apollitical Seven (Apollitical Jess-Chalala) and co-owns her with Juan Escobedo. Carlos Huerta drew the riding assignment.
Rounding out the order of finish, Staggering Stride (Mr Jess Perry-Dinastia Toll BRZ) was fourth, followed by Jess Personal (Mr Jess Perry-Personal Glory), Fitz (Mr Jess Perry-Dividends Declared),
Ask Anna (Foose-The Partys On Fire), Perrys Gettin Down (Mr Jess Perry-First Down Toll), Six Zeroes (Walk Thru Fire-Million Ways) and Princess Merida (Royaltys Choice-Fed X Dash).
