Vandys Flash Handicap
JESS RAVIN
by Danny Camp
It was a light but very classy field of horses that lined up for the Vandys Flash Handicap at Los Alamito on June 26.
Breaking from the 1-post, it was Jess Ravin that got the first call and at the wire, it was Jess Ravin
by 3/4-length. Since Jesus Ayala has had the riding assignment, Jess Ravin has won three out of five outs with the other two being second place finishes.
In the Vandys Flash, Jesus sat chilly seeming to never move a muscle and let the filly do what she was bred to do.
The sorrel filly stopped the timer at :19.644 to earn a speed index of 94 for the 400-yard event. With first place money of $11,000, the filly has now earned a total bankroll of $73,837 for her team that includes owner EG High Desert Farms and trainer Yanet Rodriguez.
Jess Ravin was bred in Oklahoma by You and
Me Partners out of the stakes-placed mare Jessica Raven. She has produced 100% money earners
from ten starters that have combined earnings over $520,000 and have tallied 21 wins with four of
them being stakes including new track record setter Paintyourownwagon and New Mexico Hi-Point aged stallion Jess Cuervo.
Jess Good Reason (Good Reason Sa-Jess Call Me Tieing) finished second under jockey Carlos Marquez . The connections include owner Cina J. and John C. Sperry and trainer Paul Jones.
My Favorite Check (Favorite Cartel-Six Checks) ran a steady race and took home the third place check. His team includes owner Ronald J. Hartley and trainer John Cooper. Tony Guymon was in the irons.
Tough Broad (TR Dasher-Feminista) and Mi Viejo (Mex) (Mr Jess Perry-Lady Of Lake TB) completed the order of finish. KR Crusin Cartel was scratched.
Emma Bug Handicap
NYMPH
by John Moorehouse
After more than six months of rest, Nymph returned to competition in resounding fashion winning the $15,000 Emma Bug Handicap at Los Alamitos on June 17.
Making her 2016 debut, Nymph tallied her third career victory and second in stakes company. She also won last year’s Corona Chick Handicap at this same California track. Edward Allred owns and bred the three-year-old filly, who hadn’t competed since December of 2015 when she finished fifth in the Long Beach Handicap. All five of Nymph’s starts to date have come at Los Alamitos.
Nymph showed zero signs of rust in the Emma Bug Handicap. She broke well from the 2-post under rider Carlos Huerta, grabbed a 1/2-length lead by the time she entered the stretch, then held off Maggie Durant during the final yards to win by a neck. Scott Willoughby trains Nymph, who completed her 330-yard trip in :16.762 for a 94 speed index.
Allred banked an $8,250 payday that improved Nymph’s earnings to $34,380. She remains the only stakes winner out of her dam, Elans Last, a lightly-raced winning mare whom Allred also home-bred. Elans Last has foaled 100% money earners from 6 starters.
Eduardo Nicasio rode Maggie Durant (One Sweet Jess-Up Down Dash) to her second consecu- tive runner-up finish in a stakes at Los Alamitos. Lin Melton trains the filly and co-owns her with Spackman Racing.
Favorite Kiss (Favorite Cartel-The Goodbye Kisser), the even-money favorite, placed third for owner Howard Nichols and trainer Paul Jones. Jesus Ayala was aboard.
Followed by Famous Cartel Lady (Corona Cartel-One Famous Lady), She Snows Shes Ivory (Ivory James-Sheza Snow Jewel), London Laura (Walk Thru Fire-Kingman Kin) and Give Me Sum Sugar (Good Reason Sa-The Goodbye Kisser).
Jack Robinson Handicap
NO MAS VAQUERO
by Michael Cusortelli
No Mas Vaquero, a 3-year-old gelding racing for Jorge Moya of Orange Cove, California, outran his 12-1 odds to win the $15,500 Jack Robinson
Handicap during the Oak Tree at Pleasanton meet on July 3.
Ridden by Marcial Ramirez for trainer Ricardo Guillen, No Mas Vaquero went 350 yards in :17.921 and earned a lifetime-best 96 speed index. The gelding’s victory was his second in seven starts, and the $8,300 winner’s share of the purse from his first stakes win pushed his bankroll to $16,477.
No Mas Vaquero was bred in California by Jay and Char Parsons. The gelding is the first stakes winner from seven starters/winners produced by Quiero Mas. No Mas Vaquero is a 1/2-brother to stakes placed Quieros Dynasty and New Track Record setter Quiero Corona.
Trust Me (Foose-Crooksy) ran second, a head behind No Mas Vaquero. Martin Arriaga rode the 5-year-old gelding for owners Jim and Melissa Bernard and trainer Jesus Nunez.
Stanley H. Watkins’ Jiffy James (Jesse James Jr-Ms Klee), the 9-5 favorite, finished third. Maicol Severino rode the multiple stakes placed 5-year-old gelding for trainer Charles Treece.
Followed by Tio Pepe Balvoa (Balboa Bay- Nohemi Sioux), One More Fire (Walk Thru Fire- Apollos Favorite), Eddies Jazzin (TR Dasher-Jazzin Mandi), Dashett (TR Dasher-Future Mother), Paulinas Prayer (Tac It Like A Man-Streakin Heaven Br), Outdashn (Check Him Out-Dashnlitia) & Miss Special Regard (Chicks Regard-The Special Side).
The Jack Robinson Handicap is run annu-
ally during the Oak Tree at Pleasanton meet. The stakes event honors the memory of Jack Robinson,
a longtime jockey in Northern California who was killed in a racing accident at the Solano County Fair in 1973.
