VOLCOMS HEART
by Luis Prieto Zamudio, translation by Eduardo Silveyra
Volcoms Heart name has become synony- mous with victory at the Hipodromo de las Americas. She is a mare already accus- tomed to the long journey of 15 hours from the humid tropics of Tabasco, to the high- lands of the Mexican capital. Even though this implies wear, in her four seasons as a runner she has achieved outstanding results. Like any athlete, there are times when you do not win, but we always see her with assur- ance on the track and giving the maximum
of her physical ability, to the satisfaction of her Cuadra Estanzuela. Undoubtedly, she follows in the footsteps of another red bay that recently went into retirement - the formidable Special Exterior.
Her most recent participation was in the 350 yard Javier Rosique Palavicini Classic, in honor of a longtime native horsemen of the state of Tabasco, in which seven candidates four years and older were nominated to. The only representatives of Mexican upbringing was the filly Una Sola.
Marked as the favorite to win in the odds, fulfilling this forecast would be difficult
because the group had proven winners of other Classics, such as Sound Of Candy, Una Sola, Bp Southern Wave, and others who, although not as proven, being in the group could provide a surprise.
The start of the race went
without a hitch. Una Sola
took the lead close to the
inner rail, a position that
could not be held because of
the push that the opponents
on her right side were giving.
Volcoms Heart was respon-
sible for cutting her aspira-
tions, as she was well assisted
by Eddi Cuellar and took
over the group in the second
half of the race, completing
the 350-yard journey by a
neck over Daring Dynasty,
who by the same difference exceeded the colt A Remarkable Perry.
The travel time was :17.19, for a 99 speed index. In the current season, the 5-year-old mare came second in the Chirina Glorys
Classic, but was given the award for first place due to the disqualification of Zoomin Jr based on the results of post-race laboratory testing.
The total prize for the Javier Rosique Palavicini Classic was
$242,600 pesos (approxi- mately US $13,080), of which $145,560 pesos (approximately US $7,848) went to the winner. Bred in the United States by P.K. Thomas, Volcoms Heart is owned by Cuadra Estanzuela and was saddled by Gregorio Alberto Razo Parra.
Present at the awards was Karla Rosique, representative of the honoree, her grandfa- ther Javier Rosique Palavicini.
Daring Dynasty (FDD Dynasty - Streakin Love) gave a great race and
clinched second place under the direction of Jose Angel Ambrosio Medina for owner San Rafael Cuadra and trainer Alejandro Marcial Torres.
