Gober Lee Mitchell Passes Away

Mitchell passed away
in his hometown of
Canadian, Texas, on
June 21 at the age of
102. Mitchell raised
Quarter Horses
for more than 70
years, including
working stock for
ranch operations
and show and race horses. Under the name Mitchell Ranch, he bred runners that accu- mulated 199 wins, including 10 stakes wins and three Superior Race Horse awards. In partnership with Burnett Ranches, he bred
37 winners with 105 wins and 13 stakes wins, including one Superior Race Horse Award. In the show ring, Mitchell Ranch and Reed Hill bred AQHA Champion Red Star Bar. Mitchell served as president of the Canadian Chamber of Commerce, the Panhandle Livestock Association, and the Golden Spread Quarter Horse Association. He leaves behind his grand- children, Robin and Mike Mitchell, as well as many other family members and friends.

in 1995, Rosie was mar-
ried to long time Quarter
Horse owner/breeder Ron
Alvarado. Married for 60
years, the Alvarados cam-
paigned a long line of Quarter Horse runners with the broodmare Dashing Noble produc- ing most of their standouts. At the top of that list was RA Noble, who won the 1999 Goetta Handicap. Rosie is survived by her husband Ron, four children, and many other family members and friends.
Muckleshoot Tribe, Emerald Downs Host Relay Races
Emerald Downs and the Muckleshoot Tribe hosted Indian Relay races on June 10th through the 12th. The event included travel allowances and other team benefits as well as a total cash payout of over $70,000. The championship team received belt buckles, jackets, the Muckleshoot Gold Cup, and $10,000 cash. Tribes from Idaho, Montana, Oregon and Washington participated in the event.
Live Racing Success in Douglas, AZ
Following a five-year hiatus, live racing
had a successful return to the Cochise County Fairgrounds in Douglas, Arizona. The track held 17 races during two days of racing on May 21-22. Cochise County Fairgrounds manager Karen Strongin estimated that between 4,500- 5,000 people attend the races both days.

22-year-old jockey
clinched the award
after a victory in the
Old South Derby on
May 13 aboard SR Inseperable. Martinez fin- ished the month with 15 victories and was third in total earnings with $290,114.
JRC Callas First Reaches Milestone
World Champion JRC Callas First (Winners Award-Calla Missy Jane, Dirty Coup) on June 5 became the 36th horse to be named an AQHA Supreme Race Horse since 2002. The award recognizes a racing American Quarter Horse who during its career earns $500,000 or more, wins two or more open Grade 1 stakes races, and at least 10 races. JRC Callas First has won 17 of 28 career starts,
Handsome Jack Flash Retires
2013 All American Futurity winner and two-time Champion Handsome Jack Flash (First Moonflash-Shez Jess Nice, Mr Jess Perry) has been retired at the age of five. Owned by breeder Debra Laney with Brenda and Norma Alvarez, New Mexico-bred Handsome Jack Flash started 14 times and won six races. He ends his race career with earnings of $1,517,491. According to an AQHA release, Handsome Jack Flash will enjoy a comfortable life and may even find a second career as a roping horse.
