The photo on page 207 shows Treacherously winning his trial to the first ever running of the Ruidoso Futurity-G1 in 1993. Treacherously (Runaway Winner-Okie Affair, Grand Alliance TB) went on to win the finals to the Grade 1 Ruidoso Futurity, as well as the Rainbow Futurity-G1 and the Sun Country Futurity-G1. He earned $548,000 that year, winning his first eight consecutive starts before being named Champion Two- Year-Old Gelding. Treacherously nearly became the second horse to Special Effort to take the Triple Crown after wins in the Ruidoso and Rainbow futurities, but his effort was thwarted when he finished third to A Classic Dash and Heza Fast Man in the All American Futurity.
Treacherously continued to race an additional four seasons for a total of 15 wins from 38 starts. He retired with earnings of $622,004, including six stakes victories in which all but one were graded events. He was also named an AQHA Supreme Race Horse and earned Superior Race Horse honors.
Treacherously was bred by Roger Knight Jr., who was also the breeder/owner of Champions Deceptively and Femmes Frolic. Treacherously raced for Wayne W. Dallas, a B-17 pilot who flew combat missions over Germany during World War II. Dallas purchased him as a yearling at the 1992 All American Yearling Sale in Ruidoso for $7,000. Treacherously was ridden by Nancy Summers in all but one of his six stakes victories. At the time of Treacherously’s Ruidoso Futurity win, Summers was the only female jockey in history to win two Grade 1 stakes races.
Treacherously retired at six years of age with a race record of 38-15(6)-4(2)-4(1) and was given to his trainer, Sam Sandoval, who used him as a pony horse for many years. Treacherously passed away at the age of 23 in November of 2014 due to natural causes and was buried on Sandoval’s ranch in Bloomfield, New Mexico. This years $1,000,000 Ruidoso Futurity-G1 was contested at Ruidoso Downs on June 12 and was won by Apolltical Chad.
