Sunburst Stakes
PRINCESS JESSE
by Danny Camp
Arivalry stirs the competitiveness in all athletes. Teana Fay beat Princess Jesse by a head in the New Mexico HBA Stakes-RG2 in February, but it was Princess Jesse who was the best in the Sunburst Stakes at Sunland Park on April 3.
Three-year-old sorrel filly Princess Jesse rose to the occasion in the Sunburst Stakes. She stepped away from the 7-post in second place under jockey Alejandro Medellin. They quickly lost the lead and raced in 7th early, but Medellin encouraged his mount and they won with authority, crossing the line a neck in front. They stopped the clock at :17.462
for the 350-yard contest, earning a speed index of 87 and the $51,000 winner’s share. Princess Jesse’s earn- ings now total $115,860, and her race record is three wins from seven starts, with a 2nd in the above- mentioned New Mexico HBA Stakes-RG2 and a 4th in the New Mexico Breeders’ Futurity-RG3.
Princess Jesse is bred/owned by Vance Mikkelson and trained by Eric Mikkelson. The filly is out of 6-time winner and multiple stakes placer Total Miracle, who has produced four winners from five starters. Princess Jesse is her mare’s first stakes winner and is a 1/2-sister to multiple stakes placed runner Kaydns Krusader.
Odds on favorite Teana Fay (Winners Version- Thirty Fourth Street) was able to hold on to 2nd for owners Jimmy Negrete and Jimmy Vasquez. Juan Gonzales is the conditioner and L. Martinez was in
the saddle. Msferrari Edition (First Prize Boston- Flirtacious Woman) was 3rd under Jose Ortiz for owner Evaristo M. Sanchez and trainer Mario Sanchez. Returning to her home state of Texas following a pair of runner-up efforts in allowance company at Hialeah Park in Florida, Kitty Kat Galore B
scored the second stakes win of her career in the Miss Sam Houston Stakes at Sam Houston Race Park on April 1.
Ridden by Rodrigo Vallejo, Kitty Kat Galore B broke fourth and raced in fourth position early in the 330-yard dash. She dueled boldly through the lane, however, and out finished My Glory Dash by a neck at the wire, stopping the timer in :16.644. The final clocking, just ticks off of Kiss My Hocks’ 2014 track record of :16.433, earned a speed index of 101.
Sent off as the post-time favorite for owner Bryon Gardner, Kitty Kat Galore B increased her lifetime bankroll to $70,368 with the addition of this $12,000 winner’s share. The four-year-old filly’s previous stakes win came in the 2014 Texas Classic Juvenile Invitational at Lone Star Park.
Bred in Texas by Bielau Oaks, Kitty Kat Galore B is produced from the unraced Oak Tree Special mare Fast Prize Ginger.

Footing is always an issue, and more so if the track is sloppy, sealed and it’s drizzling rain. Such was the case at Turf Paradise for the $45,790
AQRA Presidents Open Spring Derby on April 10. Justified qualified to the contest with a 2nd place
finish in the March 26 trials for the third-fastest qual- ifying position. Justified left the 9-post near the back of the pack for the finals. Chase Clark, who qualified the gelding, was in the saddle again. The jockey went to work and Jusstified kept the pace up until the very end of the 350-yard contest. The work paid off and they crossed the wire on top. The winning effort earned a trip to the winner’s circle as they finished a head in front and stopped the timer at :17.625 for a
97 speed index. With the $22,895 first place check, Justified now has a total bankroll of $25,967.
Justified, a 3-year-old bay colt, is owned by Tim Holdaway & David Perry and is trained by Chad Ferguson. Bred by Lucas Racing Inc. & Vaughn Cook in Texas, Justified is out of multiple winner Special Wave. The mare has produced 5 winners/ ROM earners from 6 starters. Although Justified is her first stakes winner, stakes placed IZ Special James is her top money earner with over $65,000 banked.
Heza A Royal Jess (Mr Jess Perry-Im Royal Satin) finished 2nd under jockey Albert Medrano for owner H & E Ranch Inc. and trainer Pedro Hernandez- Sandoval. May Be Fantastic SA (Fantastic Corona Jr-Darlin Treis) finished 3rd under Martin Osuna
