PAINTED TURNPIKE
by Tracy Gantz
After Oklahoma-bred Painted Turnpike won the 2016 Speedhorse Graham Paint & Appaloosa Derby-G1, owner-breeder Nolan Pevehouse expressed reservations about running the threee year old against older horses. He needn’t have worried. The colt vanquished a talented field of older runners when he won the Paul Harber Paint & Appaloosa Memorial at Remington Park on April 15.
Drawn outside with regular rider Cody Smith aboard, Painted Turnpike broke on top and he never conceded that advantage, simply pulling away to score by a facile 1 1/4-lengths in :17.563. Painted Turnpike earned the $13,338 winner’s share of the purse, increasing his total bankroll to $261,607.
Pevehouse has bred several generations of Painted Turnpike’s family. The colt is out of Paint Champion High Class Turnpike, the dam of two winners from four starters.
Ray Enlow owns and trains second-place Dashin JJ APHA (Little Jungle Jet-Dashin Di). Mario Chavez rode the 4-year-old gelding.
Texas Silk APHA (Texas Six-Judys Silk) fin- ished third for owner Charles Leggett, trainer Dee Keener & jockey Jimmy Brooks.
