Picov Derby
EMBRACEEXTRAVAGENCE
by Tracy Gantz
Not once has a horse finished in front of Embrace Extravagence. The filly kept that record intact when dominating a field of 10 in the Aug. 30 Picov
Derby at Ajax Downs.
Trainer Michelle Woodley owns Embrace
Extravagence with Patricia Ball and Gary McNichol. Unraced at 2, the filly made her first start in a maiden race at Ajax on June 14, winning by a neck. She sub- sequently finished first in an allowance race, only to be disqualified to seventh after breaking inward.
Embrace Extravagence next competed in her trial for the Picov Derby. Sent away the second choice to Deal A Fortune, she defeated that gelding by an easy 1 1/2-lengths to qualify the fastest. That made her the 3-2 favorite for the Derby final. The result was never in question, as jockey Cassandra Jeschke broke Embrace Extravagence on top and they led through- out the 350 yards to win by 3/4-length.
Gary and Marlene McNichol bred Embrace Extravagence in Ontario, Canada, from Los Alamitos winner Special Royal Takeon. The mare has produced five starters, all winners.
Fiesty Icon (Sugarman Perry-Fiesty Spirit), owned
& trained by Richard Kennedy, finished 2nd with Carly Furlonger aboard. The gelding had won his Derby trial & last year put together a 3-race winning streak at Ajax. Dylan Williams piloted Toodles Destiny (First Down Mr Jess-Toodledoo Otoole) to 3rd for trainer Renee Wilson & owner Bryan Calloway. The Texas-bred filly raced
in Texas & Oklahoma through May of this year, when Calloway claimed her out of a winning effort for $20,000 at Remington Park. Followed by Eyes That Tell (Teller Cartel-Skipping Eyes), Im Aquicktrick (El Night Shift- One Night Trick), Fearghas (First Down Straw-Eyes Like Rapid), Deal A Fortune (Dealagame-Separatist Fortune), Selective Memory (Sixes Royal-Is It Memorex), Irish Whisky (Furyofthewind-A Leading Memory) & Eyesa Speedy Simon (Its All About Speed-Eyesa Player).
Ontario Sires Stakes Futurity
ICE FISHN
By Michael Compton
Despite a bump at the start, Ice Fishin proved stubborn in the lane of the Ontario Sires Stakes Futurity at Ajax Downs in Canada, on Aug. 23
to record the initial added-money victory of her young career. Ridden by Shanley Jackson, Ice Fishin bumped with Sugarmans Delight away from the gate. She recovered quickly and dueled for the lead throughout. Once she hit the front, the gray filly edged clear late to defeat Daytona 500 by 1/2-length.
Owned and trained by Stephanie Keeble, Ice Fishin covered 330 yards over a fast track in :17.410. With a win and a placing from her first two career starts—she was 2nd in her trial heat for the ninth qualifying time—Ice Fishin has now earned $24,975.
Bred in Ontario by Full Circle Racing, Ice Fishin is the first foal to race from the stakes-placed mare Fisher Lines. A winner in 2 of 12 outs, Fisher Lines finished 3rd in the 2011 Princess Stakes Derby at Ajax Downs.
Runner-up Daytona 500 (Its All About Speed- Make Us a Miracle) broke cleanly for jockey Dylan Williams and gamely chased the winner across the line. The Ivy Lane Racing homebred was saddled by Renee Wilson.
Speedocracy (Its All About Speed-Hotdoggin Baby Doll) was fractious in the gate, bumped leaving the barrier and rallied through the lane to finish
3rd under Cassandra Jeschke. Owned by George Coleman and trained by Scott Reid, the bay gelding won his trial heat in his only other start.
Followed by Flick Me A Guiness (Flick Me A Corona-Behold a Contender), Hope Rambles On (Ramblin On Down-Bottoms Up Corona), DQ’d from 4th to 6th Pickin Wild Cotton (Wild Boyz- Cotton Country), Sugarmans Delight (Sugarman Perry-Wonders Delight), Ifwisheswerefishes (Mr
Jess Tex-Fishin And Wishin), Hal Bent (Flick Me A Corona-Hi Class Shine), Sun Splashed Silk (Dash To The Arctic-Splash In The Lake).
Ontario Sires Stakes Derby
FIESTY ICON
by Danny Camp
The Ontario stallions were center stage at the run- ning of the Ontario Sires Stakes Derby at Ajax Downs on Sept. 28. It was a 350-yard event with the 10 fastest qualifiers from the Sept. 9 trials and $58,041 to be divided among the finishers.
Fiesty Icon was the fastest qualifier after win- ning his trial in wire-to-wire fashion under Carly Furlonger. The jockey was aboard once again for the finals and their run was a near repeat of the trials.
The pair left the 3-post after an eternity in the gates. Every time the jockey offered encouragement, the 3-year-old sorrel gelding seemed to catch another gear. They were never headed and ended 1/2-length in front at the wire, stopping the clock at :17.750 for a 95 speed index. The $23,217 winner’s share takes Fiesty Icon’s earnings to $74,643, and he has now won 6 races from 11 including his last 3 of 4 starts.
Fiesty Icon is owned/trained by Richard W. Kennedy. The gelding was bred in Ontario by Picov Cattle Co. out of 2-time winner Fiesty Spirit. The mare has produced 100% winners/ROM from her 2 starters. Fiesty Icon, her first stakes winner and top earner, also finished 2nd in this year’s Picov Derby.
Im Aquicktrick (El Night Shift-One Night Trick) was a little nervous in the gate and tried to false break. Quick thinking by the assistant starter kept her settled and she got away in good shape to take 2nd under Tony Phillips for owner Steve Hunter and trainer Janet Grice. Ba Lucky Penny (Winners Award-La Ramera) took
3rd under Helen Vanek for owner Baytonia Stables and trainer Richard Kennedy. Followed by Eyesa Speedy Simon (Its All About Speed-Eyesa Player), Fool On Fire (Fire Finder-What Is It Now TB), in a DH for 6th were Jess Kiss My Dash (Mr Jess Tex-Strawfly Fortune) & A Southern Jess (Bodacious Jess-Bp Southern Mary), then Jessastonecoldcorona (Mr Jess Tex-Corona My Love), Cc Fire N Ice (Iced N Oak-Fly Thru Fire) & Wild Boyz Victory (Wild Boyz- Victorious Snow).
