DIAMONDS EDGE
by Michael Compton
Following a relatively “formful” night of Challenge races at Prairie Meadows on Sept. 12, the $73,440 Bank of America Prairie Meadows Championship
Challenge featured a bit of a surprise when 21-1 long shot Diamonds Edge rolled to an upset victory for owner/trainer Hipolito Bueno.
With jockey Fernando Fonseca-Soto in the irons, Diamonds Edge broke outwardly from his far outside draw. He quickly righted his path, rallying late to collar early leader Mister Big approaching the finish. He crossed the wire 1/2-length clear, stopping the clock for 440 yards in :21.501 (speed index of 103), just ticks off of Spit Curl Diva’s track record of :21.162 set in 2011.
NCC Anchorman & This Wagons Okay followed, but both were disqualified for interference soon after the start. Wagon of Roses LVC, the original 5th-place finisher, was elevated to 3rd. Also disqualified from 9th to 11th was Carpe Diem Drew, who came in early.
Diamonds Edge was bred in Texas by the late Joe Kirk Fulton. A longtime breeder, Fulton was inducted into the AQHA Hall of Fame five years ago.
Now a winner in 7 of 20 starts with earnings of $124,191, Diamonds Edge is out of 2-time winner and curiously-named Petriflying. His two additional stakes wins came at Indiana Downs and Canterbury Downs.
Mister Big (Shazoom-Jess an Illusion) was 2nd under Stormy Smith for Jerry Windham & trainer Charley Hunt. Wagon of Roses LVC (PYC Paint Your Wagon- Precocious Rosie) was 3rd under Jesus Salazarr for owner/ trainer Rodrigo Covarrubias. BF Farm Boy (Hawkinson- Shirleys Strawfly), Pyro (Make It Anywhere-Rare Kayoh), Wagon Tales (PYC Paint Your Wagon-Signs Zoomer), NCC Anchorman (Carters Cartel-Royal Down Jolla), Quarter Focus (The Crawfish-Feeling Giddy), Mo Zoomo (Shazoom-Stylish Form), This Wagons Okay (PYC Paint Your Wagon-This Candys Okay) & Carpe Diem Drew (Valiant Hero-Megas Way) followed.
Iowa Stallion Futurity
GIVE A WINK
by Danny Camp
Prairie Meadows was the setting for the 350-yard $93,575 Iowa Stallion Futurity on Aug. 30. Rider Mark Luark knows something and he ain’t
telling. He’s ridden Give A Wink twice and he’s won on her twice - her only two wins out of six tries. Coincidence? I don’t think so.
Under a hand ride all the way, Give A Wink over- came a weak start and rallied to finish 3/4-length in front, capturing her first stakes victory in a time of :18.086. Give A Wink ran third in her Aug. 16 trial heat and qualified sixth ridden by Cody Smith, who opted to ride third fastest qualifier Lil Puddle Talk in the finals.
With the $38,799 first place money, Give A Wink has now earned $49,667 for owner/breeder Leonard D. Reed. The filly, who is trained by Jason Olmstead, was bred in Iowa out of Special Bold Chick. The mare is a three-time winner and was a finalist in the Grade 3 Polk County Derby herself. She has now produced three blacktype runners from her 10 starters, including her top earner/stakes win- ner Bulleader.
Another horse that overcame a slow start was Wilena Featured (Cartels Feature-Time For Wilena), who was up for 2nd with encouragement from rider Jesus Salazar for trainer Jonathan Chavira and owners John L. Herrick, Connie L. Young & Ken Denning.
Shesa Vivian (Just Amazing Jess-Shesa Eye Of Rose) was 3rd under Agustin Silva for owner Jan P. Bockenstedt & trainer Tony Jones.
Followed by Jess Imagine That (Talkalota Bull- Rlr Jess Blue Heaven), Feature Me Leading (Cartels Feature-Chargin To The Lead), Tobys Sambo (Just Amazing Jess-Dashing On The Moon), Trs Amazing Leon (Just Amazing Jess-Trs Maes Dash), Lil Puddle Talk (Talkalota Bull-Lil Puddle), Ima Happy Hooker (Cartels Feature-Ru Special) & Jls Sure Shot (Hot Shot Dash-Matties Flash).
Iowa Stallion Derby
QUICKIE RICKIE
by Danny Camp
Sometimes you have to think outside of the box. Just because everybody else wears blinkers and you’ve always worn blinkers, doesn’t mean you have to continue wearing blinkers. This was the case for Quickie Rickie. The 3-year-old gelding won his first out a year ago, but he got worse and worse - running 2nd, 6th, and then three 9th-place finishes.
Trainer Wayne Garner decided to pull the blink- ers off his charge and that made all the difference
in the world. It was in the 400-yard $67,816 Iowa Stallion Derby at Prairie Meadows on Aug. 30 that Quickie Rickie stepped back into the winner’s circle - this time in stakes company for the first time. Under Cody Smith, Quickie Rickie broke 7th from the 2-hole, but he dug in and was in 2nd by the 1st call. The pair was in 3rd at the top of the stretch & crossed the wire a nose in front in :20.752. The $29,700 win- ner’s share takes his earnings to $53,946, and his race record is now 2 wins from 7 starts with a 2nd in the 2014 Iowa Stallion Futurity for owner Bob Urich.
Bred by Richard Lee in Iowa out of winner/G3 finalist Special Stepper, Quickie Rickie is his mare’s first stakes winner and top earner from 3 starters. With 7 of the 10 runners separated by 1/2-length at the finish, the photo said Trs Just Like Jase (Just Amazing Jess-Trs Dashin Diamond) was 2nd under Jorge Torres for owner Vernon Hammes & trainer Shane Miller. Harleydonegone (Cartels Feature- Valentine Jewels) & rider Stormy Smith snuck in on the inside to take 3rd for owner Bad Boys Racing & trainer Tony Jones. Followed by Trs Amazing Lexi (Just Amazing Jess-Maydecks Request), Shesa Cartel Rose (Carters Feature-Shesa Eye Of Rose), Trs Top Shot Riley (Hot Shot Dash-Sheza Friendly Kas), Feature Dance (Carters Feature-Justa Dance), Buyin Jess (Just Amazing Jess-Zinfinity), Fly Around Chueca (Talkalota Bull-Sixy De Strawfly) & Trs Justamazing Leo (Just Amazing Jess-Trs Maes Dash).
