Lubbock Stakes-G3
EAGLE ON THE FLY
by Danny Camp
New Mexico - the Land of Enchantment - is enchanting indeed. It’s where a horse can suc- ceed despite public opinion. Eagle On The Fly was
not expected to win the 400-yard $55,360 Lubbock Stakes at Zia Park on Oct. 3, but the 3-year-old bay filly showed a heart and scored her first stakes victory.
Eagle On The Fly stepped away from the 10-post under Larry Gamez for the 6th call from the gates. Although the jockey was aboard the filly for the first time, he seemed to know her well. A single tap from the right handed whip and they edged past their rivals, crossing the wire 1/2-length in front and trip- ping the timer at :19.344 to earn a 97 speed index.
The $33,000 first place money takes Eagle On The Fly’s bankroll to $204,964. Her record now stands at
7 wins from 13 races, and she’s won her last 2 out of
3. Last year, Eagle On The Fly was 2nd in the Hobbs America Futurity-G2, 3rd in the Rainbow Futurity-G1, and 4th in the Sunland Park Winter Futurity-G2.
Eagle On The Fly is owned by Martin C. Ybarra
Jr. & trained by Umberto Belloc. Bred in Texas by Christine Hudson, the filly is the 1st stakes winner out of Ladys Heart Of Gold. The unraced mare has pro- duced 6 winners/ROM/starters. All have earned black- type, including her top earner One Fabulous Eagle, who ran second in this year’s All American Futurity-G1.
Alis Jumpn (Jumpn-Gloria In Red) was 2nd under Hector Aldrete for Eloy Humberto Pena & trainer Adam A. Tapia. Kateillac (Fury Of The Wind-Wildkate) was 3rd under Jose Montoya for owner/trainer Jose C Aguilera.
