                                NM Breeders’ Championship
CINCO MENUDOS
by Danny Camp
There was never a doubt that Cinco Menudos would win the 440-yard New Mexico Breeders’ Championship at the Downs at Albuquerque on Sept. 20. The 5-year-old sorrel gelding stepped out of the 5-hole on the lead under Hector Aldrete. Although briefly headed at the first call, he was striding down the lane like a champion and his rider knew it. This was the first time Aldrete had ridden Cinco Menudos, but the jockey sat in the saddle as quiet as a mouse, knowing he was aboard a winner.
In a sharp effort, Cinco Menudos crossed the wire 1/2-length to the good. He stopped the clock in :21.272 for a career high 106 speed index. The race carried a $60,000 purse, and the $36,000 first place money takes Cinco Menudos’ bankroll to $187,487. The gelding’s record is 8 wins from 18 starts, and he’s now won his last 3 out of 4. Cinco Menudos was also a finalist in last year’s Lineage Championship-RG3.
The gelding is owned by William G. McCarty & trained by Ronald Stephens. He was bred by McCarty/Wood/Southwest Paving & Grading Inc. in New Mexico, out of Uno Menudo, who won the Zia Futurity-RG1. The mare has produced 6 winners and 100% money earners from 7 starters. Cinco Menudos becomes his mare’s 2nd stakes winner, along with $300,000 plus earner Quatro Menudos.
Osbaldo (Jesse James Jr-Shes So Blazin) was 2nd under Jorge Bourdieu for Hubaldo Solis & trainer Ken Grisham. Justified By Chicks (Chicks A Blazin-Jesstifiable Debt) was 3rd under Jose Ortiz for Juan E. Poblano & trainer Raul V. Vega. Followed by Mr Mo Runaway (Sign To Be A Runaway-Miss Gettin Cash), Corona Southern Form (Southern Corona-Pass The Form), Gonna Make You Royal (Gonamakeyoureyesblue-Sweetly Royal), Royally Cute (Sixes Royal-Cute N Rimen), Tombstone (Get Down Perry-Because Shes Royal) & Hot Super
Shot (Sixes Royal-Domeinitchy TB). Grant The Star was scratched by the stewards.
O.B. Cockerell Handicap
ONE FAMOUS SWINGER
by John Moorehouse
One Famous Swinger beat 10-1 odds to snatch victory in the 350-yard $55,000 O.B. Cockerell Handicap held Sept. 13 at The Downs in Albuquerque.
Owned by Juvenal Sanchez, the 3-year-old filly notched her 4th win in 13 career starts, although this marked her 1st victory in stakes company. One Famous Swinger, who earned black type earlier this year with
a 3rd-place finish in the Arapahoe Distaff Challenge, more than doubled her prior lifetime bankroll to a new total of $64,572 with the addition of this $33,000 prize.
One Famous Swinger made a smart run for the wire, breaking on top from the 9-gate and leading at every call. She led by a head both at the 1st call & going into the stretch, then pulled away in the final yards to win by 1/2-length. Trainer Alejandro Chavez prepped One Famous Swinger for the stakes-winning run. Sergio Dominguez drew the riding assignment, as the filly completed the race in :17.352 for a 97 speed index.
The Bird Ranch bred One Famous Swinger
out of the lightly raced Swingin Cartel. The mare
has foaled 3 starters from 6 offspring. One Famous Swinger becomes the first stakes winner in the brood, although her 1/2-brother Wingit Lika Man is stakes placed. One Famous Swinger’s sire, One Famous Eagle, was the 2008 Champion 3-Year-Old Colt.
Betting favorite Chicks Deville (Chicks Regard-La Jolla Sioux) was 2nd under Manuel Gutierrez for Cesar Marquez Castaneda & trainer Benito Guillen Vega. Clear Winn (Jess Zoomin-Winga) was 3rd under Ricky Ramirez for Tomas Avitia & trainer Arturo Chavez. Followed by Memoryflash (First Moonflash-Memory Cartel), Cut Loose Taylor (Apolitical Jess-Let Loose Corona), I Wont Lose (Okey Dokey Dale-Bits Of Bliss), Looking For Girls (TR Dasher-Girl Secrets), JM Famous Master (PYC Paint Your Wagon-Cosmotoligist), Little Reba Corona (Corona Cartel-Dashing Little Reba) & Cartel Breeze (Carters Cartel-Royal Burning Breeze).
Balloon City Handicap
ALIS JUMPN
by Danny Camp
Good horses will find a way to win. Alis Jumpn is a good horse and she found a way to win the Balloon City Handicap at the Downs at
Albuquerque on Sept. 19. With a purse of $55,000 on the line and $33,000 going to the winner, Alis Jumpn received the second call from the 5-post. She didn’t seem to be getting hold of the track at first, and she drifted in just a bit so she could eyeball her competition. But, with grit and determination, she grabbed the lead early and began pulling away.
Jorge Bourdieu was in the saddle and he was savvy enough to stay out of her way. The five-year- old mare drew clear to win by 1 1/4-lengths. She stopped the clock at :19.573 for a 93 speed index.
Alis Jumpn has now earned $230,910 and her record stands at 12 wins out of 21 starts. She has also won 3 of her last 4 races. Alis Jumpn adds this stakes victory to
an already heavy blacktype record. She won last year’s O.B. Cockerell Handicap-G3 and La Plata Stakes-G3, was 2nd in this year’s La Plata Stakes-G3, and was a finalist in the Zia Park Championship-G1, KOFX-FM Handicap-G2 and Lubbock Stakes-G3. In 2014, she was named the New Mexico Hi-Point Aged Mare.
Alis Jumpn is owned by Eloy Humberto Pena and trained by Adan Tapia. She was bred by Don S. Apodaca in Texas and is the first starter out of 2-time winner Gloria In Red.
Favorite This Candys Awesome (Pyc Paint
Your Wagon-Jess Send Candy) was 2nd under Ivan Carnero for the Estate of Carl C. Pevehouse & trainer Clinton Crawford. Aj Hardwood (Hard Hitting-Lady Woodbridge) was 3rd under Ruben Calderon for John & Anna Romero and trainer Fernando Carrete. Followed by Lady Secret Dash (Lordly Way-Lady Chimes), Ms Fast First Prize (Dmnv Mountable-Fast First Prize), California Gurl (Foose-Splashy Mama), Cd Tight Rope (Brookstone Bay-Ms Misty Brown) & Fast Dreams (Heza Motor Scooter-Devons Dream). Zoomin Away scratched.
