Anselmo Aguilar Payán Classic
ESPEJO FUSILERO
by Luis Prieto Zamudio, translation by Speedhorse
With five horses aged three years and older foaled in Mexico, this Classic was held in honor of Dr. Anselmo Aguilar Payán, a leading breeder in Mexico and owner of the Criadero La Presita. The distance was 350 yards and the purse in dispute reached $310,200 pesos ($15,364 U.S. approx.).
The betting favorite was nine-year veteran Lafishingonabugsmoon, who won this race
in 2019, 2020 and 2021, this being his fourth consecutive attempt to obtain the win. However, to do so he would have to beat the four-year-old Espejo Fusilero, who had already dominated Lafishingonabugsmoon in the Héctor Roldán Espinosa Classic on Dec. 5, 2021, over 330 yards.
The race took place over a sloppy
track, but that was not an obstacle as these runners demonstrated their power and speed. Breaking from positions #1 and #2, Lafishingonabugsmoon was on the inside
rail while Espejo Fusilero was looking for firmer ground towards the center of the track.
At the half-way mark,
it seemed that the veteran
would achieve his fourth
victory under the command
of Yair Daniel Báez Soto.
However, Espejo Fusilero
sped to the front responding
to the demands of Luis Antonio Aguilar and crossed the finish line first by 1/2-lengths in :16.90 for a 100 speed index.
This was his 12th start, with nine wins
and one second, which added $155,100 pesos ($7,682 U.S. approx.) to his earnings, which already exceeds 3.2 million pesos.
This was his first start in 2022, but previously he won the Héctor Roldán Espinosa Classic, the Subasta Selecta Derby,
and Garañones Futurity and Derby.
Espejo Fusilero is by Carnegie Haul and out of Jess Blushing, by Feature Mr Jess. He was bred by Javier Rosique León and is owned by the Cuadra Cartas Blancas where he is trained by José Eduardo Baltazar Carmona.
The hard-working Lafishingonabugsmoon, who also had his first
appearance of the current season, took second place under Yair Daniel Báez Soto. The son of Nofishinonafullmoon is out of A Special Lady Bug (by My Mr Special Bug) and was bred by Ramiro González Ozuna for his owner Cuadra Los Gavilanes.
Easy Perry Cartel (Jesstified-Tessas Decked Out, Corona Cartel) finished in third place under the direction of Ángel Santillán for
