 Golden driller stakes
Heza awesome BLue
by John Moorehouse
Running in stakes races at Fair Meadows just agrees with Heza Awesome Blue. After claiming first place in last year’s version of the Fair Meadows
Maturity, the 5-year-old stallion returned to that track on Father’s Day and came away with winner’s honors in the $20,000 Golden Driller Stakes.
Heza Awesome Blue’s second win in stakes company also marks his seventh overall victory in
18 starts for owners Cynthia and Charles Warren
Sr. This race was significant for another reason; the $11,838 first-place share of the purse propelled the stallion’s lifetime earnings into six digits at $101,173.
Heza Awesome Blue drew the inside starting gate, broke on top and led for the entirety of the 350 yards, beating runner-up Jesse In Town by a neck. Ridden by Randy Wilson, Heza Awesome Blue com- pleted his trip in :17.778 for an 86 speed index.
Guillermo Valdivia trains Heza Awesome Blue, who was bred by the Sunflower Supply Company. The stallion is the only stakes winner produced by his dam, Prissys Awesome Form. The stakes-placed mare has eight starters among 10 offspring. Chisled Form, a half-brother to Heza Awesome Blue, also is stakes-placed.
Jesse In Town (Feature Mr Jess- Whatsthatfillysname) made a late surge to finish second for owner Mary Passmore and trainer Jackie Kirby. Jesus Salazar was in the irons. Valdivia also trains Courville Got Game (Game Patriot-Heavenly Run), who challenged but faded late, finishing third. Gabriel Gutierrez owns Courville Got Game and Cody Smith did the riding.
Mean Fastball (Shake Em Open-Azure Te Fastball), Tycoon Jess (Mr Jess Perry-Royal Readytoo Wear), Speedy Gunzalez (Prime Talent-Platinum Diamond),
I See Candy Paint (PYC Paint Your Wagon-Eye On This Candy) and American Spit Curl (Spit Curl Jess- American Dove) completed the field.

amajor upgrade in competition did not prevent Hurri Cartel from maintaining his unbeaten racing record. Nadia Marcoux’s gelding out-dueled Send A Candy Guy to take winner’s honors in the $20,000 Fair Meadows Juvenile Stakes on June 23. It marked the third victory in as many outs for Hurri Cartel, and improved his total earnings to $30,078.
Prior to the juvenile, Hurri Cartel won two claiming races at Remington Park. He entered the Fair Meadows Juvenile after a five-week layoff. The time off didn’t prevent Hurri Cartel from headlining a trifecta sweep for trainer Clinton Crawford. Hurri Cartel’s stablemates, Send A Candy Guy and Hiclass Vodka, finished second and third, respectively.
Jockey Josh Romero brought Hurri Cartel out of the outside post in the nine-horse field. The gelding broke best from the gates, and drew clear of field. Drifting in to the middle of the track, the gelding maintained a breakneck pace to win by a head.
Hurri Cartel covered the 350 yards in :17.877. He becomes the first of A Classic Serenade’s foals to notch a stakes victory. An unraced 2004 mare, A Classic Serenade has seven offspring and six starters. Tammy Johnson and Jack Manning bred Hurri Cartel.
Favored Send A Candy Guy (PYC Paint Your Wagon-Send The Guys Candy), winner of the Bugs Alive In 75 Stakes, was second. Carl Pevehouse owns Send A Candy Guy, who had Tony Bennett up. Jesus Rodriguez-Najera owns Hiclass Vodka (Hiclass La Jolla-Newport Lily), who was ridden by Stormy Smith.
Rounding out the field were Jess Call Me Valiant (Valiant Hero-Jess Sass Me), Purr Country (Country Chicks Man-Purr D Cat), Jazz Wagon (PYC Paint Your Wagon-Jazzy Smash), Whoppie Wagon (PYC Paint Your Wagon-Bams Bug), PYC Diamond (PYC Paint Your Wagon-Hot As Diamonds) and Count on Rhythm (Coronas Prospect-Win On Rhythm). GRC Paint Me Quick was scratched.

the lone Thoroughbred in the June 23 Tricky Dust Stakes at Ruidoso Downs, Tactful trounced six Quarter Horses for his first stakes victory. The 6-year- old gelding appears to like 870-yard Quarter Horse events more than longer Thoroughbred distances.
In the Tricky Dust, Im Royal Quick broke on top and vied with Executive Winner, favored Valentino De Lao, and Tactful. Executive Winner on the rail checked and dropped back, and Tactful got the jump on the rest around the turn. He pulled away to win by 6 1/4 lengths under jockey Cody Wainscott.
Tactful was winning his third consecutive race, having defeated Quarter Horse claimers at 870 yards at SunRay Park and Thoroughbred claimers at 4 1/2 furlongs at Ruidoso. Martin Orona trains Tactful for Rogelio Carrasco Sr., who claimed the gelding for $10,000 last November at Zia Park.
Harris Farms Inc. bred Tactful, who he made his first 14 starts against Thoroughbreds. Unraced Scare Tactics, Tactful’s dam, has eight winners from nine starters, including $620,827-earner and multiple stakes winner Green Team-TB and two-time stakes winner Spot The Diplomat-TB.
All About Larry (Heza Motor Scooter-Come
Hell Or Hiwater) finished third with L.S. Martinez aboard, but was moved up to second upon the disqualification of second-place Valentino De Lao, who was ruled to have bothered Executive Winner. All About Larry is owned by Diane Heath and trained by John Stinebaugh. Lalumbredelospateres (Boppen Kona Man-Cowgirl Candy-TB) ran fourth under Ricky Ramirez but was moved up to third. Manuel Urioste bred, owns, and trains the 8-year-old gelding.
Completing the field were Executive Winner (Executive Menace-Go And Look-TB), Valentino De Lao (Apollo-TB-JJS First Feature), Im Royal Quick (Royal Quick Dash-Im Brendas Baby), and Bye Bye Jess (Dashin Bye-Shes Jess Special).
