Joe Legacy notched his fifth stakes victory in the $16,000 Joe Ward Handicap at Los Alamitos on Oct. 27.
With Carlos Huerta aboard, 7-year-old Joe Legacy broke on top from the outside, led by 1/2- length midway through the 400 yards, and held off Jess A Cowboy to win wire-to-wire by a neck. Joe Legacy stopped the timer at Los Alamitos in :19.888, posting a 90 speed index. The $8,800 winner’s share of the purse boosted his total earnings to $104,076. Jose Hernandez Jr. trains Joe Legacy for owner Greg Torgerson. From 35 starts, Joe Legacy has now won five stakes and finished third in two others. Torgerson unveiled the gelding five years ago
at Laurel Brown Racetrack in Utah. Joe Legacy returned to the races this past May after a break of more than two years. His victories include the Ed Giles Memorial Futurity, Elko County Fair Derby, Laguna Beach Handicap and the 2014 running of the John Ward Handicap.
The Running A LLC bred Joe Legacy out
of A Diamond Legacy, runner-up in the 2002 Miss Princess Handicap-G3 and Fountain Valley Handicap. She has produced 100% money earners from five starters, four of which are winners. Joe Legacy is her first stakes winner and top earner.
Jess A Cowboy (Dejon-Secret Return) was second under jockey Erasmo Gasca for owner Larry Stark and trainer Matthew Fales.
Corona B Gone (Favorite Cartel-Go Girl Gone) and jockey Jesus Ayala were third for owner Ruben Magallanes and trainer Hector Magallanes.
Completing the field were Love To Reason BR (Good Reason SA-Strength In Numbers), Oh La (TR Dasher-Proud Checker), SP Four Square (Favorite Cartel-Fountain Bleu), Tickle Ur Fancy (Dominyun-Sizzling Lola) and VVR Dazzling Corona (Coronas Velvet-Dazzling Chivata).
