                                 FQHRA Stallion Stakes Derby
WHO JACK
by Michael Compton
The bump in class from claiming races to the stakes ranks didn’t faze Who Jack in the FQHRA Stallion Stakes Derby at Hialeah Park on Jan. 17. Making his stakes debut, the 3-year-old gelding rose to the occasion by dispatching nine rivals in the $100,580 race at 350 yards.
Ridden by Osdany Leal, Who Jack broke on top and raced in the fourth position early. He ranged into contention in
the lane and dueled gamely
to the wire to prevail over
the appropriately named Fast
Flyin Fireball and three oth-
ers in a close finish. Sent off
as the race favorite, Who Jack
won by a neck over fastest
qualifier Fast Flyin Fireball,
stopping the timer in :17.568
to earn a 97 speed index.
It was the second win and initial stakes score for Who Jack from five lifetime
starts. The $42,244 winner’s share of the purse increased the sorrel gelding’s bankroll to $54,844 for owner Eulice Pujol. Sergio Concepcion saddled Who Jack, who won his Dec. 28 trial by 2-lengths for the third fastest qualifying position.
Who Jack was bred in Louisiana by Leigh Lepinski and Laverne Perry and is produced from the graded stakes-placed mare Paradise
Jayne. A winner in three of 25 career starts, the mare finished second in the 2004 Mardi Gras Derby-RG3 at Fair Grounds en route to lifetime earnings of $42,977. She also qualified for two additional graded stakes events. Paradise Jayne is the dam of five win- ners from six starters. Who Jack is her first stakes winner.
Fastest qualifier Fast Flyin Fireball (This Flights for You- Biscuits N Buns) just missed
in the 4-horse blanket finish under Benito Baca to finish second. The bay gelding, who was seeking his 3rd consecutive victory, is owned by Adina Baker and trained by Donnie Strickland.
Ahs Uncle Si (Struttin To Beduino-Ichies Signature) also dueled gamely and finished
a neck behind the runner-up in third. Larry Payne was aboard Ahs Uncle Si, a winner of his trial heat for owner Alicia Hill Smith and trainer Judd Kearl.
Followed by Country Mans Jazz (Bono Jazz-Country Mans Chick), Foust (Fantastic Corona Jr-Summertime Quickie), Kittyna (The Louisiana Cartel-Las Alamitos), Watch My Wallet Loto (Mr Piloto-Cocopata), Blushing First Down (Swingin Jess-Shesa Firstdown Jess), Jess Strong (Strong Hope- Jess A Classy Lassy) & Mister Swagger James (Ivory James-Magical Affection).
