CARTERS SIXTY SIX
by John Moorehouse
Already holding black type with a 3rd place fin- ish in the 2015 Sam Houston Juvenile, Carters Sixty Six entered the club of stakes winners on Jan. 17 as she out-dueled Careless Lightning to claim first in the $30,000 Hialeah El Nino Invitational at Hialeah Park.
Carters Sixty Six broke from the 4-post and was running 3rd at the 1st call. The three-year-old filly, who was fourth as then-leader The Charmed Ruler entered the stretch, made a furious closing drive under the direction of jockey Agustin Silva. Carters Sixty Six overtook her competitors and hit the wire first by a nose.
Carters Sixty Six registered her second career vic- tory in seven starts. Owner Bryon Gardner collected an $18,300 payday that nearly doubled Carters Sixty Six’s prior bankroll to a new total of $41,285. Judd Kearl trains Carters Sixty Six, who finished the 400- yard race in :19.383 and logged a 103 speed index.
Michael T. Samples bred Carters Sixty Six out of Going Sixty Six, a winning mare that Samples also owns. Going Sixty Six has nine offspring with five starters/ROM earners. Carters Sixty Six becomes the first member of the brood to earn a stakes win.
Careless Lightning (American Runaway-Corona Edge) finished second for owner Jesse Gibson and trainer R.L. Robinson. Larry Payne drew the riding assignment. Fast N Famous Eagle (One Famous Eagle-One Fast Kisser) hit the board in third place. Joe Davis does double duty as owner and trainer for the colt, who had Rolando Pina aboard. Followed by Volcom Bay (Volcom-Miss Lethal), The Next Good Reason (Good Reason SA-So So Sunday Surprise), Hearts Ona Hero (Valiant Hero-Dashing Uno), The Charmed Ruler (Favorite Cartel-Features Lucky Charm), Toastin With Coronas (Coronas Leaving You-Princess Toast) & Totti (Valiant Hero- Jess Maganette).Valiant Rogue scratched.
Hialeah Junior Maturity
STRING BET
by Tracy Gantz
Away from the races for nearly a year, String Bet returned for this season’s Hialeah meeting. In his first start of 2016, he became a stakes winner in the Jan. 17 Hialeah Junior Maturity.
Political Debut went off as the 7-5 favorite
and got away from the gate quickly. String Bet, at 10-1 odds, broke eighth and moved up swiftly. As the field approached the wire, String Bet still had
a couple of lengths to make up to catch Political Debut. He put on a burst of speed under jockey Cristian Esqueda to win by a neck in :21.323 for the 440 yards. The $15,000 winners share of the purse brings his total earnings to $45,629. String Bet began his racing career in Texas. He finished fourth in the 2014 TQHA Sires’ Cup Futurity-RG2 and was moved up to third after a disqualification.
Roger Knight Jr. bred String Bet in Texas from 2005 Firecracker Derby-G2 winner Check The Account. The mare has produced two winners from four starters. The second dam, The Checking Account, won the Blue Ribbon Derby-G3 and Vespero Express Stakes.
Political Debut (Apollitical Jess-Sizzling Lola) ran second for jockey Agustin Silva. R.L. Robinson trains the 4-year-old filly for the Garza Laurel Partnership LLC. Political Debut won the 2015 Adequan Will Rogers Downs Derby Challenge.
Joe Davis owns and trains Parti Favor (PYC Paint Your Wagon-Funparty), who finished second with Rolando Pina up. The 4-year-old gelding twice placed in stakes last year.
Completing the field were Streakin Regard (Chicks Regard-Streakin La Tac), Fyre Fly (Walk Thru Fire-Decked In Six), Wilson Wheelz (Foose- Shirleys Strawfly), Logans Zoomin (Jess Zoomin- Logans Game), Ipolito (Apollo TB-Seychelle), Just Eagle (One Famous Eagle-Debs Cartel), & Eyes Have A Fortune (Furyofthewind-Lavish Eyes).
