                                The Winter Derby
FOR SWEET JESS

For Sweet Jess not only was the fastest qualifier to The Winter Derby, but he also didn’t disappoint in the 400-yard Winter Derby finals when he took
home the victory at Portland Meadows on Jan. 25. For Sweet Jess won his Jan. 11 trial heat under
jockey Javier Matias, who was riding him for the first time. The pair worked well together and quickly took the lead in their heat, winning by a convincing 1 1/2-lengths to take the top spot.
In The Winter Derby stakes finals, For Sweet Jess and Matias broke from the 1-post alertly and received the call from the gates. They were never headed throughout the contest, but drifted slightly. With some steady pressure on the right rein from Matias, For Sweet Jess straightened. Matias then offered a bit of encouragement and with that, they finished 3/4-length in front. For Sweet Jess stopped the clock at :19.861 earning a speed index of 105, a career high for the three-year-old gray gelding.
For Sweet Jess took home the first place earnings of $7,360 and boosted his total earnings to $46,142. His race record now stands at five wins from nine starts, including a win in the 2015 Evergreen Park Juvenile Challenge, and third-place finishes in the AQHA Juvenile Challenge Championship-G2 and Pot O’ Gold Futurity.

Trial winner and 2nd-fastest qualifier Tickle Ur Fancy (Dominyun-Sizzling Lola) dug in to finish in second place under Jake Samuels for owner Hayden Brothers Ranch and trainer Hector Magallanes.
Third fastest qualifier DC Lady Juno (Gol- Junomore) finished third after a game effort with Eduardo Gutierrez-Sosa in the irons. The filly’s connections include owners Beverly and Donald Conway and trainer Hector Magallanes.

Remarkableyesapoweer claimed his first stakes victory winning the 350-yard Cypress Handicap at Los Alamitos Race Course on Jan. 17.
He stepped away from the 3-post a neck in front,
and received every call. The five year old won by 3/4-length, stopping the clock at :17.692.
Remarkableyesapoweer earned an 89 speed index along with the $11,000 winners share of the $20,000 purse, making his total current bankroll $75,444.
Remarkableyesapoweer is owned by Jesus Daniel Padilla and trained by Jose Moreno. His regular pilot, Cruz Mendez, was in the saddle.
Remarkableyesapoweer was bred in California by Hector M. Padilla out of Remarkable Power, whom Padilla also owns. The mare is a 4-time winner with a 109 speed index. She has produced three starters/ money earners. Her first stakes winner is California Hi-Point 3-Year-Old Colt/California Hi-Point Aged Stallion Remarkableyesapoweer, who is a full brother to New Track Record setter Remarkable Eyesa with over $85,000 in earnings.
