Some horses may dabble occasionally in 870- yard races, but Executive Trust revels in them. His penchant for racing around the hook led to a well-deserved award as the Distance Champion.
Executive Trust’s pedigree reveals several reasons that he excels at a distance. He has two crosses to the Thoroughbred Raise Your Glass through Special Effort. Both Executive Menace, the sire of Executive Trust, and Entrust, the dam of Executive Trust, are out of Special Effort mares. Entrust, who has also produced Ruidoso Derby-G1 winner Executive Brass, by Executive Menace, is by the Thoroughbred Relagate.
However, Executive Trust isn’t without swift Quarter Horse influences. Executive Menace is by Chicks Beduino, and Dash For Cash appears as the broodmare sire of Effortless Again, the second dam and a full sister to All American Futurity-G1 winner Elans Special.
Gus Barakis’ Scarlett Hill Farm bred Executive Trust in Texas. Scarlett Hill consigned the youngster to the 2012 Texas Quarter Horse Association Yearling Sale, repurchasing him for $14,000. Sherree Meridyth of Odessa, Texas, then bought him and has raced Executive Trust throughout his career.
Executive Trust raced exclusively at 870 yards during 2015. He won four of seven races and finished second the other three times, though he was disqualified once for interference in the turn.
Guadalupe Munoz Jr. trains Executive Trust and began the gelding’s championship season
in an optional claiming race at Sunland Park. Executive Trust scored by a neck and returned in the Sunland Distance Challenge-G3, this time losing by just a neck. After two more second- place finishes, including the DQ, Executive Trust blossomed the rest of the year, never losing again.
In the Aug. 9 Master Salls Handicap at Ruidoso Downs, Executive Trust raced five wide and still managed to get up in the final strides to win by 1/2-length. He then scored twice at Zia Park, first in the Herman Jefferson Stakes over
a sloppy track and then by a length in the King Rick Rack Stakes, a race he also won in 2014.
That second King Rick Rack victory gave Executive Trust a record of nine wins in 19 starts, for earnings of $214,017.
