                                Lobo Championship
BEAU WIZER TB
by Danny Camp
Lobo is Spanish for wolf, but to a racetracker, Lobo means $60,000. That was the purse for the 870-yard Lobo Championship at The Downs at
Albuquerque on Lineage Day, May 10. The race fea- tured 3-year-olds & older New Mexican-breds, with 5 Quarter Horses and 3 Thoroughbreds in this year’s event, but it was the Thoroughbreds who dominated.
7-year-old gelding Beau Wizer ultimately collected the first place money of $33,000. He didn’t cross the wire first, a Quarter Horse did that, but stewards deter- mined that horse interfered. Jockey Ry Eikleberry had to check Beau Wizer hard before he got to the turn. They were next to last coming around, but that only inspired Eikleberry & company. The jockey went to work hard & fast. They turned for home, showing grit and determination in the face of adversity, and it paid off. They crossed the finish 3/4-lengths to the good and tripped the timer in :44.595 for a 101 speed index.
This win makes a total of 12 for Beau Wizer, who has now banked $488,282 in QH & TB competition. His additional stakes wins include the Pepsi Cola S., O.D. McDonald Champ. (twice) and Zia 870 Champ., along with a host of stakes seconds and thirds.
Beau Wizer was bred by Mike and Suzanne Carson, is owned by Duane Cugnini, and trained by Wesley Giles. The gelding is out of 2-time stakes winner Miss Einstein ($105,205), dam of 4 stakes winners.
D E Lover TB broke last, but Frank Reyes hustled his mount, going 5-wide around the turn & catching another gear to take 3rd for owner Leroy Martinez & owner/ trainer Tony Sedillo. Infinite Bull TB ran an even 3rd under Brayan Velazquez for Tucumcari Thorughbreds
& trainer Greg Green. Followed by Cbbrookstonespecial (Brookstone Bay-Rime N Raspberries), Miss Tessmocker (Hard Hitting-SM Whistle Britches), Coronas Boy (Mr Houston-My First Corona) and DQd from 1st to last Rollickin Red (Roll Hennessy Roll TB-Deeheiress). Dark Brook was scratched.
Conquistador Stakes
MAD ABOUT THE MOON
by Danny Camp
AConquistador is a term used to refer to the soldiers and explorers of the Spanish empire. In Albuquerque, a place with a heavy Spanish influence, they ran The Conquistador Stakes, a 350-yard con- test with a lot of history and a total purse of $55,000.
When all was said and done, it was Mad About The Moon who crossed the line first, tripping the timer at :17.005 for a 107 speed index and $33,000 in first place money. The 3-year-old gelding was the odds on favorite and he didn’t disappoint. Mad About The Moon left the 4-post on top, running straight and true. Esgar Ramirez was in the irons and they received every call, crossing the wire 1 1/2-lengths in front.
The Conquistador Stakes was Mad About The Moon’s first out as a 3 year old, and he proved he
is the real deal. He’s now won 4 of 8 starts and has $615,079 in earnings. Last year, he won the New Mexico Classic F.-RG2, and was 2nd in the All American F.-G1 and Southwest Juvenile Champ.-G1.
Mad About The Moon is owned by David G. Valdez & trained by Salvador Soto. He was bred by Hughes Donaldson Horse Company in New Mexico, out of 2-time winner Streaking Power, dam of 2 stakes winners from 7 starters. Mad About The Moon is her top earner and is a 1/2-brother to stakes-placed Cartel Power.
Porfirio Cano had never ridden Clear Winn (Jess Zoomin-Winga), yet he knew he had his work cut
out for him as they left the gate. The pair hustled and rode hard to earn 2nd for owner Thomas L. Avitia & trainer Arturo Chavez. Adrian Ramos took El Damazo (Desirio-Invisible Streaker) to 3rd for trainer Jose Vargas and owners Daniel Balderrama, Juan Castro & Sergio F. Castro. Followed by Mr Special Cartel (Carters Cartel-Havana Special TB), Tf Cajun Cartel (Corona Cartel-Dashadee), Secret Mountain Pass (No Secrets Here-Icey Mountain), Miracle Kisses (Fishin Kisses- Miracle Hock) & Memoryflash (First Moonflash- Memory Cartel). Furiousprincess was scratched.
Fine Loom Handicap
FLYIN FISH
by John Moorehouse
Flyin Fish splashed back into the winner’s circle in stakes company on May 30 at Ruidoso Downs, making a late bid to take the $30,000 Fine Loom
Handicap. Owned by Tommy Galvez and Tony Sedillo, Flyin Fish tallied his fourth victory in stakes company, and his 12th overall win in 45 starts. The $18,000 payday pushed the veteran seven-year-old gelding’s lifetime bankroll to $314,942.
Sedillo also trains Flyin Fish, who broke on top from the 6-gate but yielded the early advantage to An Absolut Diamond. Those two horses continued to run first and second at the first call and going into the stretch. An Absolut Diamond led by a 1/2-length at the latter juncture, but Flyin Fish inched clear enough and reached the finish line first by a neck.
Casey Lambert was in the irons for Flyin Fish, who completed the 870-yard event in :45.792 for a 94 speed index. This marked the first stakes win for Flyin Fish since November of 2013, when he won the King Rick Rack Stakes at Zia Park.
Vessels SF LLC and P.K. Thomas bred Flyin Fish out of Jazzing Cheree. Owned by SOG Horses And Cattle, Jazzing Cheree tallied 3 stakes wins as part of
a career that reaped nearly $100,000. As a broodmare, she has produced 7 starters from 12 foals. Flyin Fish is 1 of her 2 stakes winners; the other is Jazzy Fish, who won the 2009 Schvanevedelt/Cowboy Classic Futurity.
Michael Joiner trainee An Absolut Diamond (Ketel Won-The Millennium Star) finished 2 3/4 lengths clear in 2nd under L. Salvador Martinez for owners Sandy Farris, Marc Jungers and Lisa McMinn. Henry Dominguez trainee Chasing The Heat TB (Latent Heat-Chasing Lightning) was 3rd under Ricardo Jaime for Solitaire Stable and Lisa Dominguez. Followed
by Jess A Hibily Bone (Rock Solid Jess-Imaginiff), Mickey Ward (FDD Dynasty-A Mere Formality) & Sensational Dash (Streak And Dash-Sensational Affair). Storm Chasor and Unfettered TB scratched.
