The Prize Clasico
SAZ SAZ ZOO
by Luis Prieto Zamudio, translation by Eduardo Silveyra
Every season at the Hipodromo de Las Americas, the The Prize Clasico is the first clasico carried out for two-year-old Quarter
Horse runners. It is open to colts and fillies bred in Mexico or abroad. This year, the qualifying races were held April 19 with the participation of 25 individuals, of which the 10 best times qualified to the finals and returned to the track on May 10. The distance was 300 yards and the purse prize 646,500 pesos (US $43,100 approximately).
Four of these juveniles had debuted at the time of the trials and only the filly Skye Fall was already a winner. Another point to note is that of the 10 that qualified, the only colt was Strength N Honor with the best time of 15.153 seconds. The remaining nine were fillies.
As such, Strength N Honor (#3) concen- trated the betting odds for first. Second on the table was the filly Saz Saz Zoo (#5) with a trial time of 15.345 seconds, about a length and a half of difference between them. Once saddled and presented to the public, it was only a matter of seeing them in action: the previously men- tioned were the main attraction of the show. Saz Saz Zoo took slight advantage over Strength N Honor from the start, increasing her stride until she finished the race 1/2-length ahead of her favorite rival. She was under
the able leadership of Arturo Sanchez. For a moment, it seemed like a match-race between these two consistent performers who share their genetics; the former is a daughter of Carters Cartel (out of Zentropa, by Special Leader), and Strength N Honor is a Corona Cartel colt (out of Meddlin Mischief, by Dash For Cash). “The niece beat the uncle,” said
one fan. The finish significantly improves Saz Saz Zoo’s previous time, finishing in 15.17 seconds, which gets her a SI 100.
Saz Saz Zoo was bred in the United States
by Joe Kirk Fulton and sold in the 2014 TQHA Yearling Sale (Hip 139) where Servando Montemayor acquired her for $5,500 for Cuadra (racing team) Valeria for whom she currently runs. The filly debuted and won her maiden on April 19 during the qualifying heat of the The Prize Clasico, winning by a head’s difference in front of La Crystal Sola. On that same occasion she was also directed by Arturo Sanchez, who incidentally won his second straight clasico while riding Aldegundo Cia in the First Mexico Bonus Starter Allowance (AQHA).
The prize for first place was 387,900 pesos (US $25,860, approximately, and almost
5 times the price she was auctioned for) accumulating 405,900 pesos in her incipi- ent but productive career. She was saddled by Saul Tapia Fernandez.
As previously mentioned, Strength N Honor placed second, led by Leonardo Vidaña, for Cuadra El Manantial and trainer Antonio Martinez Paz.
Third place went to the
filly Jessalilrock (Rock Solid Jess - Destinys Child), well led by Ismael Parra for Cuadra Falcon. She was saddled by trainer Jose Manuel Martinez Garcia. This two year old was also bred in the United States and acquired at the TQHA 2014 Yearling Sale (Hip 112) by Ramon R. Vega for $6,000.
The arrival of the other finalists was in the following order: Tellers Calyx (Teller Cartel – Confidential Run), Miss Carlin Bay (PYC Paint Your Wagon – Coeur D Alene), Ja Evening Sky (Gol – Ja Shes Jess Magic), Morning Brenda (Captain Courage – Winga), Skye Fall (First Moonflash – Bac Un The Buss Sissy), La Crystal Sola (Senior Solo – Corona Crystal) & Yergonna Hearme Roar (Separatist – Royal Dip).
