ROYALTYS LADY
by Danny Camp
Afield of lightly tested two year olds qualified for the Rocky Mountain Spring Classic Futurity at Pocatello Downs.
With a total purse of $27,200 waiting to be split up in the May 31 finals, it was Royaltys Lady who took home the biggest slice of that pie which turned out to be $10,080.
This was only the second out for Royaltys Lady. Her first start was in the May 10 trials where she finished a generic third and qualified with the sixth fastest time.
In the finals, however, she left the number five post with her head in front and was never headed, finishing 1/2-length in front of the rest.
Royaltys Lady was much the best on this day, stopping the clock at :16.962 for the 330-yard con- test and earning a 99 speed index. Uriel Dominguez had the riding assignment.
With her first place check, the daughter of Royaltys Choice now has a total bankroll of $10,875.
Her connections include owner Abelardo Gonzalez and trainer Luis E. Gonzalez.
Royaltys Lady was bred by A Regal Choice Inc. in California, out of Significant Lady. The mare was lightly raced and has produced 100% money earners from her four starters. Royaltys Lady is her dam’s first stakes winner, and Royal Wonders Choice is her top money earner.
Wait (Favorite Cartel-Katie Katella) had a lackluster performance in the trials. He finished third in his heat and got into the finals with the 7th fastest clocking. Nakia Ramirez stepped up to ride in the finals and did a great job to get the second place check. Wait is owned by RTM Stables and Carol McKinney. Jim Hanson is the conditioner.
Jockey Antonio Alberto qualified two for the finals, and he chose to ride Coronas Fast Game (Coronas Fast Dash-Game Snowlady). He had his hands full trying to keep his mount straight, but ultimately they crossed the wire in third place. Their team includes owner Ben L. McKinney and RTM Stables LLC and trainer Jim Hanson.
The rest of the field finished like this: Outlaw Boogie (Midnight Corona-Kissing Effort), Tic Tac Attack (Tac It Like A Man-Harney Girl), Tdm Big Shooter (Coronas Velvet-Tru Socialite), Ferarri Prize Jive (Tac It Like A Man-Ferarri Fast Prize), Whata Doll Bc (Tac L Bac-Merrie Words), Katies Shakem Bug (Royal Shake Em-Sheza Hail Ofacorona) and Hot Society Perry (Dashing Jess Perry-Miss Hot Society).
All Canadian Derby
GOODEST
by Danny Camp
Awesomest. Baddest. Bestest. It doesn’t matter how you spell it, it only matters if you cross the finish line first. Goodest did just that in the $22,538 All Canadian Derby on May 24 at Whoop-Up Downs in Lethbridge, Ontario, Canada. There were 8 qualifiers from the May 10 trials. Goodest had won his trial with a big finish and was the 2nd-fastest qualifier behind KG Guy. In the finals, Goodest didn’t get away very well and given the last call from the gates, but he hustled and never gave up. In his last 2 races, he was always in the lead. This race certainly shows his desire and breed- ing. Ricardo Moreno, who was in the irons, played it cool when they didn’t get away from the 1-post very well. He let his mount get his feet under him and they crossed the wire a length in front, tripping the timer at :18.041 for the 350-yard race to earn a 93 speed index.
The $10,142 winner’s share upped Goodest’s earnings to $19,228. The gelding now has a race record of 3 wins, 2 seconds and 1 third from 7 tries. The All Canadian Derby was his first stakes victory, but it looks like his new trainer knows what makes him happy, as William Leech has now won 3 in a row with him.
Goodest, who is owned by Charles G. Stojan and was bred by Edward C. Allred in California, is the first foal of race age out of the winning mare Plenty Good.
Big Hoss Rollin (Zillas Spin Doctor-Sables Val) ran 2nd in his trial and, with a steady effort, ran 2nd in the finals. Ramiro Castillo rode a great race for his team
of owner Deanne Davies and trainer Angelle Carter. Third place money went to Wave Rocker (Wave Carver-Sheza Special Chick), who showed lots of grit. Her team includes owner Bugle Hill Farm and trainer Kurt Calton. Jake Samuels was handling the reins. Followed by Blaines Wagon (Pyc Paint Your Wagon- Southern Bye), Cruisinfourabrusin (First Timber- Tagulator), Kg Guy (Sizzlin Red Corona-Win Thru Traffic), Stella Wave (Wave Carver-Special Corona) and Glittering Wave (Wave Carver-Glitter Galore).
Dash For Speed Bonus Chal.
ROCK THAT WAGON
by Danny Camp
With all the rain across the Midwest, the trackman had his hands full on May 24 at Arapahoe Park in Colorado. The track was very muddy and deep, but it had been sealed for the running of the Dash For Speed Bonus Challenge, a 330-yard contest with a purse of $20,150.
When the track is slippery, the rule of thumb for
a rider is to just hold your mount together and don’t get too wild. Jose Ruiz did just that aboard Rock That Wagon. They left the 1-post steady and even and Jose didn’t do anything drastic. That was the winning combination, and they ran under the wire a nose in front to stop the clock at :17.025 for an 86 speed index.
The 7-year-old gelding earned $12,090 for the win, and has now banked $127,961. His race record is 9 wins from 30 tries. The Dash For Speed Challenge is his
1st race under trainer Michel-Valverde Hipolito. Rock That Wagon previously won the Simulcast Services Stakes, was 2nd in the American Flyer Stakes & Pen Pal Stakes, and was a finalist in the La Plata Stakes-G3.
Rock That Wagon is owned by Pedro & Lilia Andazola and was bred by Bob & Jerry Gaston in Texas. Rock That Wagon is the top earner & 1st stakes winner out of G1/G2 finalist First Tea Rose, who has produced 5 ROM from as many starters.
Stel Surprise (Stel Corona-Making Surprise) had trou- ble getting hold of the track under Alfredo Triana Jr., but gained footing and took 2nd for Bernardo Nava & trainer Miguel Pena. Midori N Smoke (Special Leader-Smokin Corona) overcame a bumpy start & ran strong on the end for 3rd under Vince Guerra for Margo Schares & trainer John D Hammes. Followed by U C Me Streakin (Tac It Like A Man-As Blazin Goes), Cruzin (Swingin Jess-Spill Perfume), Im Beau Brown (Pyc Paint Your Wagon- Special Smoothie), Himalaya Jess (Feature Mr Jess-Stylish Secret), Mist Carver (Wave Carver-Special Phoebe), Beach City Beauty (Ocean Runaway-Quiet Courage) & Oh No U Didnt (Heza Fast Dash-Dashin Dee Dee).
