MY TUFF MOON
by Danny Camp
There was no bucking in Miles City, Montana,
for the May 17 Bucking Horse Sale Futurity, but there was a lot of running. And, the fastest runner of them all that day was My Tuff Moon.
The two-year-old gray colt made his first out
in the May 10 trials to the Bucking Horse Sale Futurity. He went wire-to-wire in his heat, winning by 1/2-length and qualifying with the fourth fastest time under jockey Oscar Cervantes. For the finals, My Tuff Moon was guided by rider Brian Beetem. The pair overcame a rainy day to get to the wire first.
My Tuff Moon broke on top from the 6-hole over a track that was rated fast. He didn’t seem to be very interested in the outcome, however, and had dropped to third place by the first call. So, Beetem spoke to him in the way that only jockeys can speak to horses and My Tuff Moon decided to stretch out.
The colt exploded late and finished a length on top in :15.919 for the 300-yard contest. The clocking was good for an 87 speed index.
There was a total of $15,000 on the line in the Bucking Horse Sale Futurity, and My Tuff Moon earned the $7,500 first place money. He now has a total bankroll of $7,940 and his race record is a perfect two-for-two.
My Tuff Moon is owned by Ralph Young and trained by Mike Taylor, who just happened to be the trainer of all of the horses in the field. My Tuff Moon was bred by Young in Montana. The colt is out of the unraced mare Furious Chick. My Tuff Moon is her only baby.
Jessflipacoin (Jess My Moon-Smart Dawn) won her trial heat by 1 3/4-lengths and was the fastest qualifier. She got away good in the finals and was able to hold on to get the second place money. She is owned by Ray C. Norgaard Jr. and Ralph Young. Mike Taylor was in charge of saddling and Juan Ramirez had the riding assignment.
Jess My Apollo (Jess My Moon-Jungle Song), the second fastest qualifier to the event, ran a great race in the finals. She made the lead halfway down the lane and finished in third place. Her team includes owner Ralph Young and trainer Mike Taylor. Casey Greene was in the irons.
Moneydontgrowontrees (Victory Tree- Especially Money) finished fourth and was followed by Jess Easy Mooney (Jess My Moon-Savannah Ease), First Dashin Dahl (First Down Vike-Dashin Balladena) and Jess An Okey (Jess My Moon-Miss Edie Okey). One Heavenly Eagle was scratched by the veterinarian.
Beehive Futurity
WINNERS BLACKGOLD
by John Moorehouse
Winners Blackgold wasn’t the fastest in qualifying for the Beehive Futurity on April 25, but the gelding was the quickest when it mattered in the stakes final, making it to the wire first by a neck to win the $47,190 stakes held May 13 at Laurel Brown Racetrack.
This race originally was scheduled for May 9, but that card was postponed due to inclement weather. The layoff didn’t do anything to impede Winners Blackgold, who made a marked improvement over his :15.385 time in the trials. While that time did win his heat, it put the gelding fourth on the qualify- ing ladder headed into his first-ever stakes event.
Winners Blackgold proved to be the strongest when it counted most, covering the 300 yards in :15.681 and bringing home a $16,516 payday for his owners at A and C Racing and Roping. That sum improved his lifetime bankroll to $17,622.
Chancey Spencer trains Winners Blackgold, and jockey Eddie Garcia drew the riding assignment. Chad Richard bred Winners Blackgold out of
Blackgold Playgirl. Richard also owns the 2004 mare, who is lightly raced and has produced two foals,
both of whom have made starts. Winners Blackgold becomes the first stakes winner out of his dam.
A&C Racing and Roping also owns Winners Cool Chick (Winners Version-Feature Cool Chick), the fast- est qualifier, who finished a close 2nd. Also trained by Spencer, the gelding had jockey Tyson Lusk in the irons. No Secrets Sister (No Secrets Here-Be A Sister) hit the board in 3rd for Pedro Mena. Martha Maldonado is the trainer and Jose Guzman drew the riding assignment. Followed by Tacasina (Tac It Like A Man-Fortune Babe), Otta Be A Prize (First Prize Stone-Otta Be Special), A Good Move (Maknmoves-Switching Fame), Elite Eight (Azyoucansee-Visual Evidence), RGR Secret Illusion (First Down Illusion-Jungle Raised), Game On Cool Dude (Winners Version-Signature Stride) & First Prize Lane (First Prize Stone-RM Memory Lane).
SVLAC Futurity
BF FOOSERAGEOUS
by John Moorehouse
BF Fooserageous is off to a fantastic start as a com- petitor. Birrell Farms’ home-bred gelding logged his second straight win to remain undefeated in that
many outs, and added black type to his resume with a 1 1/4-length victory in the $22,833 SVLAC (South Valley Large Animal Clinic) Futurity held May 13 at Laurel Brown Racetrack.
A Ron Moosman trainee, BF Fooserageous won his trial on April 25 and posted the third-fastest qualifying time, navigating the 330 yards in :17.161. The young gelding made a significant improvement in his first-ever stakes event, covering the same distance in :16.811. Uriel Dominguez drew the rid- ing assignment for the stakes-winning run, which produced a $7,993 payday that improved the horse’s lifetime bankroll to $8,343.
Birrell Farms also home-bred BF Outrageous, the dam of BF Fooserageous and a stakes winner herself. The mare won the 2003 Wyoming Classic Derby as the highlight in a 12-race career that included five victories. BF Outrageous has foaled six offspring, four of whom have made starts. While BF Fooserageous becomes her first stakes winner, half-brother Regal Rage also holds black type by virtue of a runner-up finish in the 2008 Corona Chick Handicap.
Favorite Hat (Favorite Cartel-Hat D Strawfly) secured second place for owner Aron Saenz and trainer Jorge Garfias. Jockey Jesus Valenzuela was in the irons. Foose sired both BF Fooserageous and Zoose (Foose-Nuturist), the third-place finisher. Zoose is home-bred by Tom Peterson, and the Riley Moosman trainee had Eddie Garcia aboard.
Followed by RGR Firstdown Blake (First Down Illusion-Mystery Blake) and RGR First To Fire (First Down Illusion-Heart Fire). Surfinthecurl, Laceys Js Little Sis, LP Miracle Man, Pay The Price and Anna Cartel were scratched. Laceys J Little Sis and Pay The Price were the 1st- and 2nd-fastest qualifiers, respectively.
