CHICKS DEVILLE

With a blistering speed index of 114, Chicks Deville charged into blacktype on May 3 at the Santa Cruz County Fair at Sonoita, winning the $17,950 Sonoita Ranchers Bonus Challenge.
Owned by Cesar Marquez Castaneda, Chicks Deville scored his breakthrough inaugural stakes victory in his 13th career out. The 3-year-old gelding now holds four lifetime wins, and the $9,873 payday from this race increased his total earnings to $33,847.
Trained by Benito Guillen Vega, Chicks Deville broke on top from the 6-gate and had the lead at every subsequent call. The gelding led by a head both at the first call and going into the stretch, then pulled away late to win by 1/2-length. Jockey David Reyes-Frisby was up as Chicks Deville covered the 350 yards in :17.310 while registering a 114 index that marked a new career high.
Although this marked the first stakes win for Chicks Deville, he did compete in two Grade 3 stakes previously, including the West Texas Derby earlier this year. This was the first victory of 2015 for Chicks Deville, who was making his fourth out of the season.
Mesquite Pass Farms Inc., bred Chicks Deville out of La Jolla Sioux, a 1999 mare owned by Esmeralda and Chad Peck. Lightly-raced, La Jolla Sioux has foaled 7 offspring, including 4 starters. Chicks Deville becomes her 2nd stakes winner. The other is Bomb Diggity, who took the 2013 Mike Hastings Memorial Stakes.
Vega also trained Downtown Richard (Kelowna Kash-Ky High TB), who took second under Emilio Tapia for owner Rigoberto Guillen. Sarah Sota (Ivory James-Kpax) was 3rd under Jarell James for Y/N Horse Stables LLC and trainer Omar Cruz. Followed by Runaway Corky (Ocean Runaway- Phoebe Ryon), Jess Creek Manor (Feature Mr Jess- Queen Creek Queen), This Queen Can Dash (First Down Dash-Oh Queen) & Wyreit (Hard Hitting- You Dazzle Me). Endless Speed scratched.
