On page 149 we have a photo of the grand broodmare FL Lady Bug in her pasture with an unknown foal. Never raced, the mare’s fame lies in her off- spring. She produced 14 foals, 11 starters, 10 ROM & 4 stakes horses, including Champion Top Ladybug & AQHA Hall of Fame Horse Lady Bug’s Moon. FL Lady Bug is the grandam of Champion Top Bug & great-grandam of 2-Time Champion/High Money Earning Horse Bugs Alive In 75. In 1971 when this photo was taken, FL Lady Bug was the dam of over $500,000 - the most cumulative earnings of any mare in Quarter Horse history at the time. FL Lady Bug was named an AQHA Dam of Distinction in 2006 and in 1999 was inducted into the AQHA Hall of Fame.
FL Lady Bug was bred by W. A. Yeager and owned by Marvin & Lela Barnes, whose ranch was named Lady Bug Ranch in her honor. From their breeding program came 3 descendants of FL Lady Bug to qualify to the 1968 All American Futurity, the first time one breeder accounted for 3 entries. 14 years later, the Barnes finished 1st & 2nd in the 1982 All American Futurity with 2 of her descendants - Mr Master Bug & Miss Squaw Hand. This was the first time the same owner/breeder accomplished this feat.
Born in 1945, FL Lady Bug is found in many modern pedigrees, including Champions Corona Cash & Royal Quick Dash, as well as 2005 All American Futurity winner/Champion Teller Cartel and PYC Paint Your Wagon. As Marvin Barnes prophetically stated years ago, and which still rings true, “Look at the horses who are running today. Take a look at their pedigrees and you’ll find FL Lady Bug in a lot of them. I’m convinced she’s one of the main reasons they’re so fast.” This year’s $70,000 FL Lady Bug Stakes was held at Remington Park on May 24 and was won by Cashae.
