                 Peppers Pride Handicap (R)
Flaxy Lady, a 7-year-old daughter of the Dixieland Band stallion Firejack racing for Amanda Sweeten, drew off in the stretch to win the March 6, 1-mile Peppers Pride Handicap (R) for New Mexico-bred fillies and mares at Sunland Park.
Ridden by Miguel Perez and sent to post as the 9-2 third choice in the field of six, Flaxy Lady defeated 2-1 second choice Our Time To Shine by two lengths in 1:39.20. Lee Gutierrez trained the chestnut mare, who banked the $60,000 winner’s share of the $100,000 purse.
Flaxy Lady was bred by Donnell Echols,
and she was claimed by Sweeten from Echols for $7,500 at Zia Park on October 25. The mare is one of 17 winners from 33 starters sired by Firejack. Racing in France and three states in the U.S.
from 2004-08, Firejack won two of nine starts
and earned $58,489. A half-brother to two Grade 1 winners, including 1996 Pacific Classic Stakes (G1) winner Dare And Go, Firejack has sired the earners of more than $1.04 million from eight crops. He is owned by O.E. Floyd and stands at Hourigan Horse Farm at Anthony, New Mexico.
Flaxy Lady is also one of three winners from four starters produced by Donali, a winning Kentucky-bred daughter of the Seattle Slew stallion Doneraile Court. Her second dam, the winning Silent Review mare Slide Out Front, ran
third in Paseana’s 1992 Apple Blossom Handicap (G1) at Oaklawn Park. A 1988 Florida-bred foal, Slide Out Front foaled six winners from seven starters, including Silent Eskimo, a half-sister to Donali who won three graded stakes from 1998- 2000, including the 1998 Fantasy Stakes (G2) for sophomore fillies at Oaklawn Park.
Flaxy Lady traces back to her fourth dam, Stay Out Front, a multiple stakes winning Florida-bred daughter of the Curragh King stallion Currock.
Flaxy Lady was making her third career start against stakes company, and she was coming off of a seventh-place finish, nine lengths behind winner Slammed, in the 6-furlong, $100,000 La Coneja Stakes (R) on February 6. Raced exclusively in New Mexico, Flaxy Lady has won eight of 25 starts -- including both of her outs at the 1-mile distance -- and she has earned $162,998. The mare has won two of four races and has banked $84,100 since the claim.
Shugs Charlie finished third, 5 1/2 lengths behind Flaxy Lady. Dixie Jen, 7-10 favorite Proofsinthepuddin and Short Pockets completed the order of finish. Runner-up Our Time To
Shine, a $7,000 yearling purchase at the 2019 New Mexico-Bred Sale, was stretching out in distance off of her 3 3/4-length win in a 6 1/2-furlong, $35,000 non-winners-of-three allowance for state-bred
distaffers on February 8. A 4-year-old daughter of the Distorted Humor stallion Laugh Track owned by Nancy Summers, Scott R Bean and James D. Masek, the filly has won three of 10 races, and
the 20,000 runner-up share of the Peppers Pride Handicap purse pushed her earnings to $102,911.
Shugs Charlie is a 5-year-old daughter of the Indian Charlie stallion Shame On Charlie racing for Humberto Munoz and Karla J. Munoz. The mare has won three of 18 outs, and the $10,000 third- place share of the Peppers Pride Handicap purse increased her bankroll to $105,497. Her sophomore season record includes a second-place run in the 1-mile, $100,000 Enchantress Stakes (R) for New Mexico-bred 3-year-old fillies at Sunland Park.
Flaxy Lady’s winning connections include owner Amanda Sweeten, trainer Lee Gutierrez, and jockey Miguel Perez.
