Jack Cole Stakes (R)
Christopher Roybal’s No Pasa Nada rallied to win the May 7, 6 1/2-furlong Jack Cole Stakes (R) for New Mexico-bred Thoroughbreds at SunRay Park.
Ridden by Alejandro Medellin for trainer Aurelio Valdez and sent to post as the 2-1 favorite in the field of 10, No Pasa Nada defeated Shining Source by 1 1/4 lengths while stopping the timer in 1:19.21. The 6-year-old Attila’s Storm gelding earned his first stakes victory and the $60,000 winner’s share of the $100,000 purse.
No Pasa Nada was bred by Robert Driggers and Del Rae Driggers, and he was claimed
by Roybal from owners Robert Driggers and Ben Lee Ivey for $12,500 at Sunland Park on February 12. The gelding is one of 26 official black-type stakes winners sired by the late Attila’s Storm, a Kentucky-bred son of the Storm Cat stallion Forest Wildcat.
Racing from 2004-07, Attila’s Storm
won five of 18 starts -- including the 2007 Toboggan Handicap (G3) at Aqueduct -- and earned $534,983. The stallion has sired the earners of more than $16.01 million from
12 crops, including multiple stakes winners Waltzing Attila, Stormin The Jewels, Hush’s Storm and Thermal.
Attila’s Storm died after colic surgery on June 23, 2021.
No Pasa Nada is also one of five winners from as many starters produced by Charlotte’s Drone,
an unplaced New Mexico-bred daughter of the Full Choke stallion B.G.’s Drone. The gelding is a full brother to multiple stakes winners Bella Dona and Tilla Cat, and he is a half-brother to 2020 New Mexico Cup Derby Championship (R) winner Lariat.
No Pasa Nada’s second dam, the New Mexico-bred Tilt The Odds mare Charlotte’s Ego, won four stakes from 1997-2001, including the $56,400 New Mexico Distaff Handicap (R) at SunRay Park in 2001. His fourth dam, the New Mexico-bred Crimson Falcon mare Fanny Falcon, won the 1981 New Mexican Stakes for 2-year-olds at The Downs at Santa Fe.
No Pasa Nada traces back to her fifth dam, Tuff Ruler, a winning daughter of the Nasrullah stallion Sir Ruler and a full sister to stakes winner May Ruler.
Raced in New Mexico and Arizona, No Pasa Nada has won six of 32 starts, and the $60,000 winner’s share of the Jack Cole Stakes purse increased his bankroll to $279,073, of which $96,188 has been earned from three outs since the claim. The gelding’s stakes resume includes a second-place finish, 4 1/4 lengths behind winner Roll On Diabolical, in the
2019 Rio Grande Senor Futurity (R) for New Mexico-bred 2-year-old colts and geldings at Ruidoso Downs.
Tucum finished third, 1 3/4 lengths behind No Pasa Nada, and was followed by Diabolical
Ruler, Sea Emperor, Izeright, Jet N G, Delbert Too, Cheese Tray and All Chrome.
Runner-up Shining Source is an 11-year-old dark bay or brown son of the Montbrook stallion Source racing for Terri Rust and Barton Ranch Stables LLC. The gelding has won 15 of 67 starts, and the $20,000 runner-up share of the Jack Cole Stakes purse bumped his earnings to $736,405. Shining Source’s seven stakes wins
in New Mexico include the 2017 and 2018 Jack Cole Stakes.
Tucum is a homebred 4-year-old son of the Holy Bull stallion King Bull campaigned by Gary and Gail Balzano’s Tucumcari Thoroughbreds. The dark bay or brown gelding has banked $142,149 from 12 races, and his three wins include last year’s 6-furlong, $100,000 New Mexico Cup Derby Championship (R) at Zia Park.
No Pasa Nada’s winning connections include owner Christopher Nathaniel Roybal, trainer Aurelio Valdez, and jockey Alejandro Medellin.
