NOSTRANGRTOTHERAIN
Making his second lifetime start, Nostrangrtotherain broke his maiden with a wire-to-wire, two-length victory in the May 8, $100,000 C.O. “Ken” Kendrick Memorial Stakes (R) for New Mexico-bred 2-year-old Thoroughbreds at SunRay Park.
Nostrangrtotherain covered 4 1/2 furlongs in :52.09 under jockey Miguel Perez. Clifford Lambert Sr. trained the bay Shame On Charlie gelding for owners Jimmy Powers and Rebecca Powers.
Nostrangrtotherain was coming off of a fifth-place finish in a April 2, 4 1/2-furlong maiden-special-weight dash for state-bred juveniles at Sunland Park. The gelding was bred by Greg Green and Dwain Yarbar, and he became the sixth official black-type stakes winner from 34 starters sired by Shame On Charlie, a Kentucky-bred 18-year-old son of the In Excess (IRE) stallion and 1998 Santa Anita Derby (G1) winner Indian Charlie.
A full brother to champion and 2007 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1) winner Indian Blessing, Shame On Charlie has sired the earners of more than $1.6 million from seven crops, including stakes winners Tight Fittin Jeans, Effort N Results and Shame On Powers. The stallion is owned by Barbara J. Brown and stands at The Quarter Company at Chamberino, New Mexico.
Nostrangrtotherain is one of three winners from as many starters foaled by
Campfire Party, a 12-year-old winning Kentucky-bred daughter of the Forestry stallion Forest Danger. His second dam, the Tour D’Or mare Cigno D’Oro, won two stakes in New Jersey in 2005, including the Spruce Fir Handicap at Monmouth Park.
A 1999 New Jersey-bred foal, Cigno D’Oro produced six winners from as many starters, including Prendimi, a half-brother to Campfire Party who won five stakes
from 2019-21, including the 2021 Maryland Million Classic Stakes (R) at Laurel Park. Nostrangrtotherain’s third dam, the Roman Reasoning mare Signa, foaled Dabnabit, a half-brother to Cigno D’Oro whose three stakes wins from 2010-11 included the $94,500 New Jersey Breeders’ Handicap (R) at Monmouth Park.
Nostrangrtotherain traces back to his fourth dam, Fellows Best, a winning Florida- bred daughter of Funny Fellow and dam of multiple stakes winner Michael’s Angel, a full brother to Signa.
Nostrangrtotherain earned the $60,000 winner’s share of the Kendrick Memorial purse to bring his bankroll to $60,930 from two starts. Sent to post as the 3-1 second choice in the field of seven, the gelding returned an $8 win mutuel.
Better Believe, the 8-5 favorite, finished second to complete a $2 exacta dividend of $8.60. New Cut Road, New Mexico Jeremy,
Tatas Joe Mark, Nacho Grande and Shame On Sam completed the order of finish.
Better Believe races for R. Lee Lewis and Brad King, who also bred the bay son of the Bernardini stallion Marking. A full brother to 2021 Mountain Top Futurity (R) winner Marked, the gelding was coming off of a one-length victory in a 4 1/2-furlong, $31,000 maiden-special-weight races at Sunland Park on April 2. Better Believe banked the $20,000 runner-up share of the purse to increase his earnings to $38,600 from two starts.
New Cut Road pocketed $10,000 for
his owners, Mark and Annette McCloy. A homebred son of the multiple stakes winning Malibu Moon stallion Rule By Night, the dark bay or brown gelding was making his career debut.
