SHUGS CHARLIE
Sent to post at odds of 10-1, Shugs Charlie scored a three-quarter length victory in the open May 21, 6 1/2-furlong Toni Samora Memorial Stakes for fillies and mares at SunRay Park.
Shugs Charlie stopped the timer in 1:19.03 under jockey Enrique Gomez. Filiberto Quiroz saddled the 5-year-old Shame On Charlie mare for owners Humberto Munoz and Karla J. Munoz.
Shugs Charlie earned the $54,450 winner’s share of a $82,200 purse. The mare was
bred in New Mexico by Barbara Brown, and she became the seventh black-type stakes winner sired by Shame On Charlie, a winning Kentucky-bred son of 1998 Santa Anita Derby (G1) winner Indian Charlie.
A full brother to two-time champion Indian Blessing, Shame On Charlie has sired the earners of more than $1.7 million from seven crops, and his 35 starters include multiple
stakes winners Effort N Results and Shame On Powers. The stallion is owned by Barbara Brown and stands for a $2,500 fee at The Quarter Company at Chamberino, New Mexico.
Shugs Charlie is also one of two winners from as many starters foaled by Shug’s Spirit,
a winning 10-year-old New Mexico-bred daughter of the Artax stallion Diabolical. The mare is a full sister to 2020 New Mexico Cup Juvenile Championship (R) winner Champ Spirit.
Shugs Charlie’s second dam, the winning Holy Bull mare Bugs Day, produced two stakes-placed runners, including Got Aces,
a full sister to Shug’s Spirit who ran third in the 2013 C.O. “Ken” Kendrick Memorial Stakes (R) at SunRay Park. Her third dam, the winning Oh Say mare Wumps, finished third in the first division of the 1996 Batna Stakes (R) for Maryland-breds at Pimlico Racecourse in Baltimore.
Shugs Charlie was coming off of a third- place finish, 5 1/2 lengths behind winner Flaxy Lady, in the March 6, 1-mile Peppers Pride Handicap (R) for New Mexico-bred distaffers at Sunland Park. All told, the mare has won four of 19 starts and has banked $159,947.
Raneem (Fed Biz-J P’s Flashy Honey) finished second and was followed by Cleopatras Charge (Will Take Charge-Cleopatra’s Finest).
A Kentucky-bred 6-year-old daughter of the Giant’s Causeway stallion Fed Biz, Raneem races for Max Franklin. The bay mare has won
four of 24 outs and has earned $149,482 while campaigned in two states, including California.
Cleopatras Charge is a homebred sophomore Will Take Charge filly owned
by Samuel F. Henderson. A Kentucky-bred, Cleopatras Charge has won two of eight races, including the March 27, $300,000 Sunland Park Oaks, and the $7,500 third-place share of the Toni Samora Memorial Stakes purse bumped her earnings to $203,376.
Girona (Alternation-Just Waiting), Ragtime Rythm (Bernster-Tener Gusto), and Miss Important (Graydar-Sudden Ghost) completed the order of finish.
Shugs Charlie’s winning connections include owners Humberto & Karla J. Munoz, trainer Filiberto Quiroz, and jockey Enrique Gomez.
