A KOOL SECRET
by Michael Compton
AKool Secret scored his first stakes victory in the $15,000 second division of the 350-yard Swift Stakes at Louisiana Downs on Jan. 27
Ridden by Alfonso Lujan, A Kool Secret raced
in third at first call and led by a head in the stretch. With a late rally, he crossed the wire a neck in front of Eye N Capo and jockey Damien Martinez. A Kool Secret covered the distance in a lively :17.397, earn- ing a 105 speed index.
The final time was just off Cute Mic Jagger’s track record of :17.299, set in 2017, and was the fast- est clocking of the day at the Bossier City track.
Owned and bred by Norma Guerrero and Cynthia Cruz, A Kool Secret improved his mark to 16-4(1)-4(2)-3(2) and the $9,000 winner’s share of the purse increased his earnings to $95,023. Trained by Jose Huitron, the colt was second in the 2015 Harrah’s Entertainment Futurity-G3 at Louisiana Downs and in the 2017 Streakin La Jolla Stakes.
The California homebred is the first foal out of 2-time winner A Kool Zoom, a half-sister to graded stakes winner Stolis Kool Chick. His second dam is Grade 1 finalist A Very Kool Chick.
Eye N Capo (Capo De Capi-Satisfeyen), seek- ing his third stakes score, just missed and finished second for owner Ruben Garcia Montemayor and trainer Jose Ponce.

Barbra B Handicap
RACY HIGH ROLLER
by Tracy Gantz
The outside post position was the place to be in the Barbra B Handicap at Los Alamitos on Jan. 14. Racy High Roller, breaking from the 7-post, avoided all of the bumping that took place and kept He Is The Risingstar from his third consecutive win in the stakes event.
Racy High Roller broke on top in the 550-yard dash and, at jockey Eduardo Nicasio’s urging, flew to the wire leading throughout to win by 1/2-length. The team stopped the clock at :26.900 for the wire- to-wire win, and Racy High Roller earned a career best 112 speed index.
Racy High Roller brought home the $11,000 winner’s share of the purse for trainer Christopher O’Dell and owner Abigail K. Kawananakoa, who purchased the gelding for $125,000 at the 2015 Heritage Place Yearling Sale. The earnings improved the gelding’s total bankroll to $276,200. At two, Racy High Roller also won the PCQHRA Breeders Futurity-G2 and was 4th in the Ed Burke Million Futurity-G1.
Racy High Roller was bred by Sunflower Supply Co. out of unraced First Down Racy. The mare, who a half-sister to Champion Miss Racy Jess, has pro- duced 100% winners from three starters, including stakes-placed and top earne-r First Fancy Racy.
Cesar DeAlba piloted He Is The Risingstar (Mr Jess Perry-Meddlin Mischief) to 2nd for owner Fulton Quien Sabe Ranches LP and trainer Paul Jones. Chicks Fayvorite (Favorite Cartel-Chicks Tell) was 3rd, but was disqualified to 4th, moving Keith Craigmyle and Paul Lewis’ homebred Miss LoujeanTB (Unusual Heat- Tempting Date) into third. Vinnie Bednar rode Miss Loujean for Craigmyle, who also trains the 7-year-old Thoroughbred mare. Followed by Run Raging Rhino Run (FDD Dynasty-Love That Six), Apollitical Gamble (Apollitical Jess-Three Green Leaves) and Newport Coaster (TR Dasher-Wave Babe).
Cypress Handicap
ONE PROUD EAGLE
by Tracy Gantz
Owner/breeder Ron Hartley and trainer John Cooper collaborated on Champion Moonist, and they have another good runner in One Proud
Eagle. The 4-year-old gelding captured the $25,000 Cypress Handicap at Los Alamitos on Jan. 19.
One Proud Eagle broke on top for jockey Cesar DeAlba and he glided to the finish line for an easy wire-to-wire 1/2-length victory. The team completed the 350 yards in :17.573 for a 95 speed index. The $13,750 winner’s share of the purse boosted his lifetime earnings to $318,733 and his record is now 14-7(4)-1(1)-3(1).
“He is a nice horse,” said Cooper, who turned 80 years old just days before the Cypress. “We had to do a little surgery on him. But he’s coming around nicely.”
In 2016, One Proud Eagle won the AQHA Juvenile Challenge Championship-G2, Robert Adair Kindergarten Futurity-G3 and Holiday Handicap and has placed in two other stakes.
Hartley bred One Proud Eagle out of winner Guy Chasing. She has produced 100% money earn- ers from three starters. One Proud Eagle is her first stakes winner and top earner.
Paul Jones trains second-place Evil Genius (Favorite Cartel-You Call It Madness) and owns him with Abigail Kawananakoa. Oscar Peinado rode the 4-year-old gelding, who won last year’s Governor’s Cup Derby-RG3. Tarzanito (Favorite Cartel-Ancient Empress) finished third for owner A1A Racing LLC and trainer Yanet Rodriguez. Eddie Garcia was
in the irons. Tarzanito won the 2017 Sgt Pepper Feature Handicap and finished second in the 2016 Golden State Million Futurity-G1.
AJs Anna Smoke (Separatist-Annas Babe), G S Wintermeyer (Favorite Cartel-My Donna Doll), Jess A Cowboy (Dejon-Secret Return), Viento Negro (First Moonflash-Coup Of Corona) and Stelfast (Stel Corona- The Goodbye Kisser) completed the field.
