Marathon Stakes
JW WHO DAT
by Michael Compton
JW Who Dat has spent much of the last two years competing in the claiming ranks at distances ranging from 300 yards to 550 yards. But the six-year-old battle-tested son of Agouti relished the stretch out to 870 yards in the Marathon Stakes at Louisiana Downs on Jan. 13.
Claimed for $3,500 at Evangeline Downs two starts before the Marathon by his current connec- tions, JW Who Dat returned quick dividends for owner Renato Contreras and his son, trainer Javier Contreras, who figured JW Who Dat would enjoy running around a turn. They were right.
Piloted in the Marathon by Antonio Alberto, JW Who Dat broke in second from the six-hole and dueled with Big Boy Agouti through the early stages of the contest. JW Who Dat shook away from that rival, opened a clear lead in the stretch and prevailed by 1-length at the finish. His time of :46.142 earned a speed index of 93.
The Marathon marked JW Who Dat’s first foray into stakes company and was his fifth lifetime win. The victory boosted his earnings to $47,192 with the additon of this $9,000 winner’s share.
