Charger Bar Handicap-G1
KIDDY UP COWGIRL
by Tracy Gantz
Owner David Nelson lives in Turner, Oregon, and has long been friends with trainer Jimmy Glenn Jr. They most recently
collaborated on Kiddy Up Cowgirl’s triumph in the $100,000 Charger Bar Handicap-G1 at Los Alamitos on Jan. 7.
“Jimmy rode some horses for me in the late 1980s,” Nelson said. “Then he came along and said, ‘I’m going to
California, would you send a
couple of horses with me?’ I
said sure. He’s been training
them ever since.”
Glenn called the Nelsons when Robin McPherson wanted to sell Kiddy Up Cowgirl to someone who would give her a good home. The Nelsons bought Kiddy Up Cowgirl, who subsequently won the
2017 PCQHRA Breeders Derby-G3 for them.
Dona Ana County Stakes
MAJOR BITES
by Danny Camp
$85,000 was at stake for eight hopefuls that lined up at Sunland Park for the Dona Ana County Stakes on Jan. 28. It was a 440-
yard event for older horses. Major Bites and jockey Jose Alvarez stepped into the 2-post. Although the horses right beside him were being fractious, he never changed his attitude. Major Bites broke on top and increased his lead at every call, finishing 2 1/4-lengths in front. He stopped the clock
at :21.110 to earn a 104 speed index. The $51,000 winner’s share of the purse boosted his total earnings
to $297,712. His record is now 21-6(2)-4(2)-3(1). The 5-year-old gelding is owned by Israel Bordier and trained by Jesus Carriete. His other stakes victory comes from the 2017 Namehimastreaker New Mexico Classic Championship-RG1.

Kiddy Up Cowgirl went off at 21-1 in the 400-yard Grade 2 Charger Bar Handicap. Under jockey Eulices Gomez, she broke sec- ond and quickly took the lead to out-finish Thermonuclear Energy by a neck in :19.813.
“When we came down this time, we noticed that she’s probably gained about 100 pounds,” stated Nelson. “She looks more muscular and
more mature.”
Kiddy Up Cowgirl, a four-
year-old sorrel filly, now has a race record of 5(2)-3-4(1) from 18 starts and boasts a total bankroll of $217,041.
David Martin bred Kiddy Up Cowgirl in California out of unraced Girls Choice. The mare has produced 100% winners from three starters. The MacPhersons purchased Kiddy Up Cowgirl as a yearling for $20,000 at the 2015 Los Alamitos Equine Sale.
The Parsons Family Limited Partnership’s homebred 5-year-old mare Thermonuclear Energy (Walk Thru Fire-Terrific Energy) was coming off a win in the Las Damas Handicap and finished 2nd in this race under jockey Eduardo Nicasio for trainer Christopher O’Dell. C.K. & Laurel Allen’s homebred Strawfinders Jessee (One Sweet Jess- Strawfinder) was 3rd under jockey Cesar DeAlba. John Cooper trains the 5-year-old mare, who was 2nd in the Las Damas in between 2 allowance wins. Followed by One Sweet Runner (One Sweet Jess-Check Her Running), Jess Paint Your Lips (Jess Louisiana Blue-Paint Your Lips), Jess Mas (One Sweet Jess-Corona Mas Fina), Honeymoon Candy (PYC Paint Your Wagon-Jess Send Candy), Time For Jess (Apollitical Jess-Coronation Time), Duck Dash N Go (Coronas Fast Dash-Duck Mea Running) & Jess Good Reason (Good Reason SA-Jess Call Me Tieing).
we are looking forward to the Mesilla Stakes sometime in March. “
Hot Authorization (Corona Caliente- Authorized Love) finished second after a bumped start for owner Sergio Holguin Cliften Nielsen and trainer. Ricardo Armendariz. Raul Herrera was in the irons.
Play Misty Foreme (Jesse James Jr-Arbor Mist) and Jose Enriquez also bumped at the start and finished third for owner Robert D Smith and trainer Jose Muela.
Princess Jesse (Jesse James Jr-Total Miracle), Yudes Jess Dashin (Jess A Chicks-Baby Doll Dash), Altitude Project (Woodbridge-S L R Lonesomedove TB), Cartels Star Daddy (Big Daddy Cartel-Chivato Star) and A Sure First (First Moonflash-Sure Thats Hot) completed the field. Buildem Fast and Woody Can Do were scratched.
Major Bites was bred in New Mexico by Carlos Paez out of 2-time winner Dyna Mo Rime. The mare has produced 100% money earners from 5 starters with 2 stakes horses, including stakes placed Dyna O Mite. Major Bites is her first stakes winner and top earner.
“When this horse came to us, his stomach seemed to be bothering him,” said the trainer. “He wasn’t eating really good, so we looked
at that as priority. I think it paid off. Coming into this race, he was feeling like a million bucks. He had been training well and putting on some weight. He’s really calm around the barn and good to be around. He gallops like a champ and, as you can see,
is a good gate horse. Owner Israel Bordier is a great guy to work for, as he is always concerned about the well being of the horses. Now
