Breeder/Owner: Luis Miguel Albores Gleason Trainer: Leonilo Cruz Garcia
Jockeys: Moises Gonzalez & J.A. Ambrosio
2017 Record: 7-6(2)-0-0, $176,598, Subasta Selecta F.-RG3, Mex. F., fnl. Garanones F.-RG3
Reina De Reinas, in being named the Mexican Champion of 2017, lived up to her name, which means “queen of queens.” She won six of her seven races, including two major futurities in Mexico.
Luis Miguel Albores Gleason bred Reina De Reinas in Mexico. He also bred 2017 Champion 3 Year Old and Champion 3-Year-Old Gelding Hold Air Hostage in Oklahoma.
Albores sold Hold Air Hostage at Heritage Place, and he consigned Reina De Reinas to the 2016 Subasta Selecta (Mexico’s select yearling auction). He repurchased
the filly for 110,000 pesos (approximately $5,994). Reina De Reinas is by graded stakes winner La Jollaroid, a son of Streakin La Jolla, and she is out of the winning Royal Quick Dash mare Royal Miss Della. Both sire and dam are Texas-breds.
Reina De Reinas began her racing career in Mexico on March 5, competing in a 220- yard maiden event. Racing for Albores in the name of Cuadra San Lázaro de Arará, she won easily by 1 1/2-lengths, posting a 94 speed index.
Next came the trials for the Mexico Futurity, and with 180 hopefuls, 22 trials were needed. Reina De Reinas competed on the second day of trials, April 23, qualifying for the final with a 1/2-length victory.
Though a rough trip may have compromised favored Hippy Dashin Horse in the May 14 finals, Reina De Reinas had no difficulty. She broke from post 9, and while the finish was close, just a neck, she came away with the win, completing 250 yards in :13.026.
Reina De Reinas aced her June 25 trial for the Garañones Futurity -RG3 as well, winning by 1 1/2-lengths, but in the July 16 finals she finished sixth. It was her only defeat of the year.
She completed the year with her trial and the finals of the Subasta Selecta Futurity- RG3. In the Sept. 3 trial, on a muddy track, she won by a length. The track for the Oct. 1 finals was listed as good, though the race was run after a downpour. Reina De Reinas scored by 3/4-length, racing 350 yards in :17.260.
