JOCKEYS’ GUILD ANNOUNCES SUPPORT FOR HORSERACING
INTEGRITY ACT
Lexington, KY (March 19, 2020)
Today, after lengthy discussions with the horses and riders will also help regain the trust
Jockeys’ Guild Board of Directors and its management, the Jockeys’ Guild announced
its support for the Horseracing Integrity Act (HIA). This federal legislation is moving through Congress and would create a national agency run by the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency, the group that runs medication control pro- grams for America’s Olympic teams and others.
“The Horseracing Integrity Act will give the industry the first uniform set of rules, includ- ing penalties and investigation standards,”
said Terry Meyocks, president and CEO of the Jockeys’ Guild. “This bill creates uniformity and is the solution to create a level playing field, eliminating illegal drug abuse and pro- tecting jockeys and horses alike.”
“The Guild is dedicated to working with the entire industry to ensure that racing has the highest level of integrity and transparency,” Meyocks continued. “Guild members believe that strong measures to protect the safety of
of the fans and general public.”
“For too long, horse racing has been regu-
lated by a diffused and ineffective system of more than 30 different racing jurisdictions,” said Shawn Smeallie, executive director of the Coalition for Horse Racing Integrity (CHRI). “The Jockeys’ Guild’s formal endorsement of the Horseracing Integrity Act will help pass the bill in Congress. The industry is rallying around the HIA, and the Jockeys’ Guild is an important voice of support.”
The Guild is committed to continuing to work with Congress and industry leaders, such as The Jockey Club, to address issues of similar and mutual concerns, including improving standards for jockeys, horses, and the industry as a whole.
