James S. Smith Memorial H.
UP AND COMING
by Tracy Gantz
Up And Coming gave trainer Christopher O’Dell a fine birthday present when he avoided trouble and captured the $20,000 James S. Smith
Memorial Handicap at Los Alamitos on April 5. During the break, trouble on the outside resulted
in a disqualification. Up And Coming broke from the 2-post and jockey Eduardo Nicasio guided his mount closer to the rail and avoided the trouble. Up And Coming scored by a head in :17.837 for 350 yards, posting an 88 speed index.
O’Dell trains Up And Coming for owners La Feliz Montana Ranch LLC and MRB Racing LLC. The three-year-old brown gelding was a $67,000 purchase at the 2018 Los Alamitos Equine Sale. The $11,000 winner’s share of the purse boosted the gelding’s total bankroll to $73,686.
Dr. Ed Allred bred Up And Coming out of unraced Hits Keep Coming. The mare has pro- duced two starters, both winners. Stakes-placed Chickasis, the second dam, has produced such stakes winners as Hot Hitter and Hard Hitting, as well as the dam of World Champion Freaky.
Jesus Ayala rode Pay Me In Front (FDD Dynasty-Bac In Front) to second for owner
P & J Racing Ltd. & trainer Jaime Gomez. Pay Me In Front won three of 11 previous races.
Allred also bred third-place Sounds Good
(Stel Corona-Ynot Win) and races the gelding. Vinnie Bednar rode Sounds Good for trainer Scott Willoughby. Sounds Good broke his maiden in December at Los Alamitos.
Maximo II (Concorde’s Appeal TB-Race To Riches) finished fourth, but was disqualified and placed seventh. Zoom On Jess (Jess Zoomin- Feature Miss Fame), Spring Favorite (Favorite Cartel-Spring Bling), and Brockmire (Texas Icon-A Mere Formality) finished fifth, sixth, and seventh and were moved up to fourth, fifth, and sixth.
